ANOTHER strange rendering problem at 24/44.1

Hi all
I have a customer who uses our M42 nebula VSTi. He just switched soundcards to enable recording at 24/44.1 . However when rendering with the M42 ( which uses a soundfont oscillator) he gets the chipmunk effect after rendering. ( of course, using Tracktion)
My partner ( Dr Ambient) also uses the same card, but uses Cubase as host. He has experienced no problems.
Could this be a Tracktion issue? Is there any settings in Tracktion which my client should be aware of?
Thanks , any help would be appreciatted

Has he changed the render options inside Tracktion? If not go to export/audio files and change the setting there.

Thanks...waiting for steve to reply as he can answer these better then I canplatinumears wrote:tconrardy wrote:However when rendering with the M42 ( which uses a soundfont oscillator) he gets the chipmunk effect after rendering. ( of course, using Tracktion)What card is he using?
Is he using the "Export" function or the "Render"?
Does it happen if he freezes the track?
Can you describe the "chipmunk effect" in more detail?

Hi everyone,
Ok...to be more specific, the card is an M Audio Audiophile and I have recording options set to 24 / 44.1 in Tracktion.
I am recording straight to a midi track and playing it back. Upon playback of the midi, the sound is garbled and as I stated 'chipmunk like'...it sounds faster and warped and garbled, like a loop that has been shortened. This effect has happened with all of the patches I have tried.
My render options are all consistent with 24/44.1 and I have tried M42 with and without other plugins in the same project. The effect did not happen with the old Audigy card I had.
The M42, playing straight from the midi controller, sounds just fine. It is only when I record midi and playback or record midi and render to a wave file in Tracktion that the garbling occurs.
Thanks for the help,
Steve

IDEA: steve: could you try setting the card to record at a slower rate ( and setting options in Tracktion appropriattly) and see what happens?
Please excuse discussing this problem on this forum, but trying to rule out if its Tracktion related.

I don't know if it's related, but rendering at sample rate others than my audio settings gives strange problems in the rendered file ie: missing tracks or parts of tracks etc.
Those problems go away if I render at the same sample rate as my audio settings. I don't own M42, I use mostly Wusikstation, but WilliamK said it was a WS bug and that he was working on a fix; maybe it's a similar problem?
On a side note, I can't understand why the audio card settings would have any bearing on a render output, I didn't think the audio card had any part in the render process, but evidently in this case the result is the proof and the proof is in the result.

I just loaded up M42 and it works fine (as I remembered it)
Maybe my version is out of date? (V.1)
Your description makes me thing of sample-rate problems.. you say you used to use an Audigy? Does that mean the project started at 48KHz? If so, try continuing at the same sample-rate..
Is the Audigy still installed? Perhaps try disabling it if so.. if not, make sure all its drivers are thoroughly uninstalled.
Could you post a clip of the problem? That might give us a clue.. I'm just guessing here really.
It seems very odd to me that playing the synth live works, but sending it recorded MIDI doesn't.. is that definitely correct?

Ok a few more clarifications. Sample and bit rates are consistent throughout. There is no change at all between recording and rendering as far as sample rate is concerned. It was the first thing I checked as I know that the speed warbly effect can be caused by this. But no luck. I was recording at 48k with the Audigy only because of the ASIO restriction at that sample rate. However, I had next to no use of the full version of M42 during that time.platinumears wrote:I just loaded up M42 and it works fine (as I remembered it)![]()

The Audigy is not installed.
I tried again last night and it got worse...at first it played just fine from the controller and then the rendering bug to a track as usual...I then made a program change by removing the chordworx plug I had in the chain before M42 and suddenly, even on playback the sound was garbled. I tried again without any other plugs in the project and after playing fine for a minute or so, M42 started to randomly garble once more. I did not even change anything this time, which is worrying.
Ok..just tried again. It usually works the first time, recording ok. Then there seems to be no response, as in it does not respond to MIDI, when I use the keyboard. I then try to play back the clip and no sound. Then use the controller again, and suddenly garbled sounds. Then I press play and play the recorded clip and again, garbled sounds. I've rendered a short mp3 of the garbled sound...it's the first M42 preset 'Quasar', with no other plugins or fx or anything. Just straight recorded in Tracktion to a Midi clip and then rendered to a wave file.
You can hear the example here:

Very annoying !! and frustrating...Maybe I'll try version 1 of M42 and see if this works.
Update: I tried version 1 and for a full five minutes it was fine. Playing fine, no matter what patch and recording without a hitch. I was just about to close the program and jump for joy when it happened again....more garbles
Looks like I'll have to use another host for this instrument as it is just so lovely I must must use it !!
An idea: If I dig out a copy of XT andhost it in XT, inside Tracktion it might just work. If it does, it means this is a Tracktion issue. Right?
Thanks all,
Steve

Problem solved via workaround !
M42 works for me hosted in XT, which suggests to me that it is a Tracktion problem, or perhaps something in Tracktion does not agree with my system...
Anyhow, M42 and XT accept program changes on the fly without a hitch, record midi clips and render just fine through different patches.
Thanks everyone. We may not actually have solved it, but I am happy there is a workaround.
Still, Tim, it is a worry...although it may only be a problem on my particular system for some strange reason, otherwise I guess you'd have heard more about similar problems with others...
Great synth though....love it.
