My guess is that it wasn't, Access included a 'Moog' filter with their latest OS last year. I'm just assuming that since they didn't release a Moog filter emulation until then, they must have designed their original filter based on something other than a Moog. I could be wrong though.aMUSEd wrote:Wasn't the filter on the Virus modelled on the Moog filter anyway originally?
Is the Minimonsta as good as Access Virus?

Yes, thats true. As far as I know it hasn't been modeled upon anything specific, although they are mentioning the Prophet-5 in their manual. In any case, the Virus filters have been non-self-oscillating until the mentioned addition in the "C" series, so it can't really be the Prophet-5 either...Joxer the Mighty wrote:My guess is that it wasn't, Access included a 'Moog' filter with their latest OS last year. Well I was sure I'd read this on their own site so I checked back - look under the Virus C and Indigo's - it clearly says "Emulated Mini Moog™ Filter"Joxer the Mighty wrote:My guess is that it wasn't, Access included a 'Moog' filter with their latest OS last year. Well, for certain buyers yes I think. Think about it this way:munchkin wrote:The MM can make the sounds of the 303/SH01 but is there any point in comparing them?
- You don't have a lot of money, actually you just have a little and you can really only justify purchasing ONE synth to get you buy for synth sounds. Or lets say you're a guitar player who isn't really into synths, but you do want to have a good one available for the certain times when you do need one.
- You're looking for a synth that can do a wide range of sounds, and you'll want something that can somewhat minic some famous style synth sounds (like the 303). You really don't give a f**k if it's PERFECT, you just want something you can jam on and do similar style sounds.
- You dont want 72342324 freebies, you just want one to learn how to use really well, so it can really feel like an instrument, rather than just a preset machine. Instead of a bunch of plugins with a bunch of different ways or working you just want one that you can learn real well and be happy with.
I think a lot of people are looking for just one synth that will get them by because they can't afford a lot, or don't really need a lot. Is the Minimonsta a good choice for them? Well, feature wise I think yes. It's got some really good things going for it because of all the modulation ability, and the Melohman octave and one of the best sounding filters around. Sound wise I can't say, because everyone likes different things. Interface wise, everyone likes different things. Price wise, everyone had different needs. Theres a few things that no one can answer for another person, but I do think that the Minimonsta is a good choice for someone in this situation because of it's ease of use, high sound quality, great filter and modulation abilities.
- Are there other good choices? Yeah. Theres a ton of them.
Anyway, for 303 style sounds, here'sa little thing I did and posted in another thread to check out of the Mini in action.
Ok I'll shut up now before the FBI come and bust down my door for Identity Theft. (impersonating squids)

Yes. But this is not the original Access Virus filter.aMUSEd wrote:Well I was sure I'd read this on their own site so I checked back - look under the Virus C and Indigo's - it clearly says "Emulated Mini Moog™ Filter"Joxer the Mighty wrote:My guess is that it wasn't, Access included a 'Moog' filter with their latest OS last year. I see - this came as an enhancement with the updated OS.
Even so - it may not be the original filter but it still seems a little ironic that people are asking does a Moog emu sound like a Virus when the Virus is trying to sound more like a Moog
(which was my point essentially)

Sorry, this is just a marketing ploy IMO. If you can only afford one versatile synth then compare z3ta+ with MM. They'll probably be similarly priced.
I see no point in comparing a $1000-$2000 synth with a $200 one if it's value for money you're after.
I'm sure this stupid thread will run and run. Followed by a thread comparing MM with Nord synths and one comparing MM to the Neuron and so and on just to hype this bloody synth...
Anyone who buys a MM and thinks they're getting a Virus is not only kidding themselves but is falling for all the marketing hype. Go and actually play a Virus and then tell me it's anything like the MM. So what if the MM can do some Virus sounds and visa versa. So can most workstation synths released by Korg, Roland and Yamaha. Why not bring those into the discussion? Just about every synth has moog patches. The Virus was never sold as a moog any more than Korgs Trinity or Nords Modular were.
The more I read about the MM doing everything except make the tea the more I go off it. Even though it's a nice synth in itself the hype surrounding it is ridiculous IMO.

it is a great synth and it does nail the moog sound but i wouldn't expect it to replace wusikstation or vanguard (the only two commercial synths I have right now). if it could then it would make those two buys useless. wusikstation does rich complex pads, vangaurd does trance, and MM does moog leads.
comparing it to anything other than a moog is pretty ridiculous IMO...

I have yet to hear a softsynth that matches the depth of character of the Virus. They are getting close but no cigar, need more processing power to get there IMO. I haven't explorerd the creamware stuff though.
Great Virus sounds:
Virus 1
Virus 2

I'm still waiting for/expecting/HOPING someone designs a Virus soundset for Wusikstation, for instance. I'd pay for a good one definitely.

I was listening to that demo growing more and more ill with all the horrible sawy trance nonsense then the Gianna Sisters bit came on. That was a very nice detour indeed.stefancrs wrote:I love the Giana Sisters part!

The Virus TI demo at NAMM was not the best though.

Now that you mention it, how does the M:M compare to Nord synths and the Neuron?I'm sure this stupid thread will run and run. Followed by a thread comparing MM with Nord synths and one comparing MM to the Neuron and so and on just to hype this bloody synth...
