I play along with the drum loops then go back and add some variation. You can use the tap tempo feature to figure out the tempo of the song. Then when you add stuff you can be sure to drop stuff right on the 2 etc. Simple to switch things around, have beat 3 and 4 be beat 1 and 2. You can take a drum fill at any tempo, cut it into little pieces and then put it back together if you have the patience.
