You are not alone, for expressive playing this would be essential…catzilla wrote: Tue Apr 11, 2023 8:25 pm Am I the only one who is dissapointed that curve points can't be modulated?
Come on, the standart envelopes can be modulated, but not MSEG?
Besides that, I'm happy. The modulation system is now complete, the browser got even better, project/track level modualators/remotes make Bitwig a perfect DAW for live.
Bitwig 5 is up

Meh... I'm pretty underwhelmed. I think I'll be skipping this one.
I know MSEG is something that people have been clamouring for (for like a decade plus) so I'm happy for the people who finally got it, but I don't really see right now how it fits into what I want to do. I wanted to give it a fair shake so I've watched a couple demos of people playing around with it, but I'm not really sold on it yet.
Project and track level macros/modulators are definitely nice to have, but I don't see them changing things meaningfully enough for me personally. The new browser looks... fine... but I'm not keen on shelling out the price of an upgrade plan for that.
Every improvement that I've heard about seems to make sense and I can see how some of these things might make sense for people in certain settings and genres. (Maybe MSEG is a killer feature for people who are really into dubstep. I dunno. Live your best life.
) But as someone who mainly does audio/midi recording, plus some sound design to get the synths and effects that I want, nothing about this update really jumps out to me right now.
It's probably just not for me, and that's fine.

What do they mean by this:
"And new mapping options allow you to launch scenes and clips with any hardware."
What have changed that have brought new mapping options from before?

Is it just a coincidence that it came out a little over a year after their "XO free with Bitwig purchase or update plan renewal" promotion ended?... So maybe the next significant update will be a little over a year after their "U-He synth free with Bitwig/update plan" ended.j wazza wrote: Tue Apr 11, 2023 7:52 pm really happy they added msegs, drawable wavetables and waveshapers. I don't care about the other things too much, but maybe modulating the mixer could be useful. That seems like a pretty big overhaul which is what makes it worthy of a version 5 update, but I could live without that as automation is fine.
There are other things I want but we can't have everything in one update. Lots of people asked for msegs and wavetables, I've seen as many people ask for msegs as any other request. We'll have to wait for our other requests to be fulfilled. It is odd that it skipped from 4.4 to 5.0 with no real updates in between though for about 6 months, and I hope we don't have to wait that long for the next one.

Total coincidence. The brain will find patterns or images where none really exist. Patternicity or apophenia.Ou_Tis wrote: Tue Apr 11, 2023 11:39 pmIs it just a coincidence that it came out a little over a year after their "XO free with Bitwig purchase or update plan renewal" promotion ended?... Common examples of apophenia include:
- putting together unrelated events (conspiracy theories)
- seeing objects in the clouds
- identifying a face in your food or drink
- being able to pick out common pareidolias, such as the “man on the moon” face
- making bold decisions based on a perceived pattern of luck
- making large generalizations based on a small sample group (for example, all apples must be red because I’ve only seen red apples)
- feeling as though you’re always seeing the same numerical sequence or same time on the clock

I'm also reserving judgement...mholloway wrote: Tue Apr 11, 2023 4:13 pm They sure did change the pop-up browser. Hrm. I guess only time will tell if it's actually "better" or just "different."

The modulation system is now mature. Pretty much any lack someone might have pointed out is addressed.wltchris101 wrote: Tue Apr 11, 2023 4:40 pmExactly! I think there's more to it than at first meets the eye. I think this is pretty huge for the modulation system, which was already bloody ace and the main reason I switched to Bitwig in the first place. There could've been a few more goodies I suppose, but I'm sure there's more to come. I'm pretty happy with what's on offer here and I think I'll probably upgrade at full price for the first time (my plan expired about a month agomuzicxs wrote: Tue Apr 11, 2023 4:26 pmWhat I like about this update is that they applied the concept of curves everywhere! In modulators, in grid modules, in Polymer. That's not a small undertaking, in my opinion, and definitely worth a version bump.SLiC wrote: Tue Apr 11, 2023 3:58 pm All nice to have, but personally I was expecting a lot more- this is like another point update.
Also, project-level and track-level modulators are huge! Imagine what crazy stuff you can do with project-level modulators...) once it's out of beta.
One of the small but some welcome improvements is that now, when the mod arrow is active, you can use the Alt key to edit the parameter itself! So it is no longer necessary to disable modulation to tweak the parameter values.

Freebies and substantial updates have been rare enough that it shouldn't be all that hard to check. Could just be a coincidence. But it does seem like an obvious thing to do to maximize profits, and they are a business after (and über?) alles....billcarroll wrote: Wed Apr 12, 2023 12:02 amTotal coincidence. pretty great upgrade. I'm not at all shocked that it's not packed with features enough for some people. The latest pattern in DAW software development seems to be incremental updates, which fits right in with Bitwigs update plan paradigm. I won't be at all surprised if they release a few more updates this year that add in even more features etc. I'm going out on a limb here and predicting that retrospective record happens before v6.
I'm super happy to see new performance features, clip launching is still completely ruled by Bitwig and Live, and someone has to move it forward! MSEGs look to open up things to some massive degree. Also exited about the new browser, these are the kinds of features most developers will completely ignore chasing the latest thing. IMO they gave a bit to all the major areas; performance, modulation/tweaking, and DAW improvements.

Do you recall what month that was? Because I'll probably wait until v5 is out of beta and another upgrade deal comes around before I buy another year.Ou_Tis wrote: Tue Apr 11, 2023 11:39 pm

Most people and companies find it pretty tough to execute on master evil plans.
