I've been demoing Bitwig and Studio One as possible replacements for Logic (and possibly MuLab) as a do-everything DAW. I loaded 4 Divas with a complex patch and the same one-bar loop into each DAW as an exercise in efficiency, both in UX and resources. I ran each DAW, noting both CPU percentage and RAM used. I used system reported numbers since each DAW reports resource usage differently. I also made sure to only load the VST2 version in each. Very strange results on my M1 MacBook Air.

Studio One: 22% using 3.97GB RAM. (Does for RAM what Diva does for CPU. )
Bitwig: 25% using 1.5GB RAM. (The JVM they use eats a lot of RAM.)
MuLab 9 (in Rosetta!): 26% using 675MB RAM.
Logic: 27% using 850GB RAM.

Despite how surprisingly pokey Logic has become, it's also very light on RAM, so I will be sticking with it for the occasional usage of FlexPitch. I'm sure there's a couple other things in there I may use someday, like the video features, but MuLab has 99% of what I need on a daily basis and even in emulation, competes very favorably against the 800-pound gorilla! It's also a pleasure to use compared to the bloated GUIs on the other DAWs.

(For fun, I tried the same test on my 2015 MBA 11". It crackled on the third Diva and completely died on the fourth.)

Interesting. 4 x Diva in Studio One on my windows PC consumes only 922 MB RAM (Empty song takes about 600 MB)

I should have said: this is the new 6.0 demo. I'm not sure why it's taking so much memory. I restarted it several times, all with similar result. I'm using the stock engine settings, including the minimal underrun protection. I should probably remake the project from a fresh boot.

The same here: 6.0.1 (the latest update, full version), 128 samples buffer size and "minimum dropout protection". I don't own MuLab App to compare, however, I have MuLab plugin that works great in Studio One.

P.S. I was "Logic" user before it was sold to Apple years ago, then I migrated to Studio One (I've also been working with AutoCAD projects for years so I had to stick to the PC architecture).

I started on Logic 5 Silver. I was so happy with my new SilverVerb! When Apple came out with Logic 7, they managed to destroy pretty much everything that I loved about Logic.

I reran my test and this time, S1 only took 1.08GB. All I can think is that I was using the same project to play with AAS plugins and I had 3 Chromaphones and 2 UltraAnalogs. For some reason, replacing them with Divas and saving and reopening the project didn't drop the memory requirement. Very strange.

Still been playing with M9 and it's still my favorite despite a couple of UX annoyances, like having to drag a plugin from the far right to the far left to create a new track instead if just chucking it in the middle. With a trackpad, that can be a nuisance. But I can work so quickly, even faster than the old Logic.

You can move your plugin browser to the far left using the Browser-button menu.
I find the left side is faster.

I downloaded the demo app version 9.0.59 a few days ago, and I'm surprised. The DAW concept seems to me the best I've tried. I have tried many DAWs, but MULAB is different, very easy to assimilate.

In the piano roll system, switching from Switch composer to editor and vice versa is very cool. Also, each track has its own editor, so if you modify the editor view of a track, it does not affect the editor view of another track, so you can have different editor settings on each track to our liking. Great.

It also has a List Editor, only a few DAWs have it, but the List Editor of Mulab has a very easy way to edit, those little windows where dragging with the mouse to change the values ​​are great. One of the best list editors I've seen. It’s a pity there is no option to maximize the List Editor window, for those of us who like to work in full window.

The letters are the perfect size so that everything is clearly understood.

The virtual MIDI Keyboard is the best I've seen by far. My God, how much work and talent are in this DAW!

Things I don't like so much, as I said in another post, I really miss a lot be able to keeping the note position when dragging notes up and down in piano roll with the mouse. Many DAW's allow this by adding CTRL, ALT or SHIFT to the drag.

Another thing that I cannot manage is that Mulab recognize my plugins and virtual instruments, it seems that have to scan in each drive on the PC, I have scanned all the drives, and even so it has not incorporated even 10% of my instruments and VST that I use regularly, and that other DAWs detect without problems when starting the DAW.

I'm probably doing something wrong, since I've been testing Mulab since a few days. I apologize in advance if I was wrong.

Hi, at the moment M9 doesn't support VST3, but it's on the list

Also, even more fabulous is that the fact Mutools is a one man business so he (Jo Langie) is the developer of this DAW.
