Fantastic animations, Guenon!

Sometimes you have to graphically animate very simple things, such as
drawing midi items. :tu:

Are you new to Reaper? In my experience, the best features "for you" can come at any time. I don't really think about whether I'll upgrade or not, I will. The last upgrade was in Oct 2016. That was seven years ago. So, yes, I see reaper as a subscription with a cost of something around $10 a year paid in advance. There are enough new features to justify this year's $10 upgrade.
I am new to Reaper. I bought my $60 (yes a bargain) license in the last 3 months.

I've used a lot of the free DAWs that come with interfaces over the years, and about 10-15 years ago those "lite" versions were quite powerful and I basically never encountered limits on my workflow and never saw a need to upgrade to the full versions of Cubase, Protools, or longer ago Sonar. So I've been in the mindset of "what am I actually paying for here?" for a long time.

My license covers this upgrade. I will almost certainly do it once I see the initial wave of bug reports get resolved and we're at 7.01 or whatever they name it.

The big changes that people seem to be excited about are lane dividers and Fx grouping. The lane dividers are nice but not earth shattering. I did watch Kenny Gioia's video on FX containers and can see that is definitely a nice feature.

Mmhh .... in my opinion the biggest, crucial new feature is the new swipe comping mode.
It is particularly suitable for editing live drums, guitar solos or vocals.

I'll need to check that out then.

Then it's for sure nothing to attract the average KVR-crowd.

We are all lonesome single artists who never recorded live stuff or something else that's really handmade ... :hihi:

Ah, I can see then why you think that this is a big deal. It's really not. Cockos continually updates Reaper and releases updates of various sizes on a near constant basis. Sometimes they include major features, often they are minor collections of features and bug fixes. Some of my most used updates over the last few years just came at some point release and weren't associated with a major version number in any way. While the new major number updates are often a bit larger, they are a bit different from other vendors. I really don't see them as much of a change TBH. The only major thing that is associated with major releases is that they might trigger an update payment for you. For many of us who upgraded/entered with v5.x, this is the case as your price includes two full major version numbers.

Now, I can remember some releases in the past that included larger cosmetic changes 3.x -> 4.x for example. But, for the most part, the major changes just feel like a wrap up of whatever has been in the works for a bit whenever they're close to a new major number.

With most vendors, I would wait until reports come out before even doing minor updates. Especially, e.g., Steinberg, Ableton. I've become used to show-stopping bugs in .0 releases from most of the major vendors. I don't find this to be the case so much with Cockos. I'll usually update immediately on one of my low priority machines but seldom encounter any reason not to follow up on my other machines ASAP, but probably not mid-project.

In any case, my assertion that "I will upgrade" really relates only to "will I pay for the upgrade to the next version," and that will always be yes for me as long as Justin is running the show.

Hehe, thanks :tu:

Ah, neverbeeninariot already suggested Licecap, which is very nice and low overhead. I usually use ShareX, though, as I also use it to grab video captures of game prototypes, for audio mockups, and that sort of stuff. ShareX works well, but it might be a bit overkill for short .gif GUI captures.

Thanks, ShareX is portable and the OCR tool is very awesome !

I can't believe nobody has mentioned the best new feature of R7:
Cockos Arcade's ROCKET PAINT!!
If you missed this, just open the About window (Cntrl F1 on PC), hold Shift and double left click on the info screen.

Now if someone can tell me how the hell to play the damn thing.

How? There's no paintbrush icon on the toolbar.

Use the left/right arrow keys to stear and the up key to thrust, delicately.
And the contrails/exhaust is the paint.

You fly the rocket, and it paints as it flies. Think of it as lunar lander meets paint.
