there are a few of us that dislike T2's midi editing

but midi editing dose have all the tools you need

& the rest of the program makes up for it IMO

 T2

The piano roll is something of a turn off. I do wish I could extend the height to greater than just under half my screen. Especially with velocity visible, the actual piano roll height is just over 20% of my screen height. This means scrolling the piano roll vertically is more often needed, or keeping it compressed enough that it is hard to work with. It is easy to toggle the velocity info visible or hidden with a key so that helps but I would rather just be able to stretch the track to the full screen height.

I disagree that all the tools needed are there. Needed of course is a subjective term, but the lack of aftertouch is one glaring omission.

There are also no tools for randomization of velocity or note position. If you want to select some notes to quantize only them, there is no percentage quantize. It would be handy to have more tools to manipulate velocity and cc data. For example, if I want to increase the contrast between the lowest velocity and highest of a group of selected notes while maintaining all the notes overall relationship, there is no means to do this. Another example would be an additive sine function to add vibrato like effects

There is no means to select cc data and copy it to repeat say the movement of the mod wheel or other controller. You cannot display more than one cc value at a time which is a pain when editing live performance.

Tools for the manipulation of velocity and cc data are rudimentary.

I would like to have more flexible control over notes. As one example, to be able to auto extend each note end to the start of the following note, or some percentage.

There is no simple save midi clip to library function.

All of these things can be accomplished manually and a few with reasonable workarounds, but they add up to a midi environment that is far from what I would hope for.

That said, I still would not trade Tracktion for other hosts avaiable on the Mac. It's amazing ease of opening a project, and just getting to playing some music and trying out new ideas is so satisfying. Hopefully, Mackie will have someone who loves midi working on the program and a year or two from now it will be much better in the midi department.

Im not a good judge of midi, I really learned most of my midi abilities ( or lack there of ) in Reason. Im mainly a guitar player but I understand alot of people dont like Reasons midi layout. I agree its all up to what works better for you!!

pdxindy would be a good candidate as a consultant for an overhaul of Tracktion's MIDI editing. :D

Most of those points are really good ones, once again making me aware that I'm a MIDI newbie for never having thought of 'em.

Still, for my very basic needs (fixing up drums and "realtime-played" parts), it's more than capable.

there is, but you need to make the GROOVE TEMPLATES your self

& this is still a pita

& the rest of what you said i fully agree with

apart from the waiting a few years for a midi loving programmer :hihi:

Likely that is so for quite a few people.

I have this suspicion that not so many people are that much into midi (proportionally) because most of the modern hosts are no more and often less capable midi editing wise than the atari I owned like 15+ years ago. Overall, I didn't even dream back then that today I would have the amazing audio and video tools that I have. This is the golden age of the home studio.

Thanks for the reminder. The templates are okay, just would be nice to be able to extract a template from midi or audio.

well, was trying to not set up unreasonable expectations, but you are right... I'm all for sooner!

I've been with Tracktion from really on too and I couldn't imagine using anything else now, though I find myself using other tools purely to get around Ts deficiencies (timestretch...)

Like Greg, the midi is fine for me (mainly audio) though I did seriously try eXT the other weekend for the first time and found the midi editing so intuitive. It just done things like I expected. :) Seriously considering eXT now to use as a plug within T...

Well Tracktion has IMHO ever been more "Audio" than "MIDI". And that's what I prefer. I use it mainly as quick arranging tool for audio snippets. Those amateurish midi-clips I sometimes produce to trigger VSTi's can be handled by Tracktion with ease... :hihi:

Sounds like you need a *dedicated* MIDI-Editor for your purposes.

I agree totally with the pxdude, I shall personally give Beno a call and tell him to send you a ticket.

Don't rest till you get it like you want:)

eXT is very nice, midi wise. I use it from time to time, but I would rather see that Tracktion picked up the pace..

Oh, and to add to the list:

Disable/mute notes. Many times I just want to hear how it sounds like without one or two notes, but definately don't want to delete them.

And my memory sucks, I can't remember shit. Maybe I'll order some RAM

:nutter: :smack: :D
Say YES to OpenSource Software!!

I can't get used to the midi piano roll.
I don't like it, and I don't want to like it.
Otherwise I like Tracktion and use it a lot.
I'll use it less if eXT gets ReWire support...

I've never been much of a piano roll guy so no serious complains here. However a few improvements (something like a % random variation in timing or velocity) could make the production of more human sounding midi tracks easier. Currently I use various midi plugs (humanisator, ndc midi plugs, stepbeater-stepchild) as handy substitutes.
Overall I'm so happy with Tracktion that I still use my 1.6 NFR  . OK I know, I'll be buying a shiny box soonish.
If I go insane, please don't put your wires in my brain

I am on OSX... Don't know of any that stand out.

Ext has been mentioned a few times, but it is PC only.

Besides, it adds a level of complexity to use another program. I am recording into tracktion and want to work there because it is an environment that makes sense to me. I like it because it is simple and efficient. Having to use multiple other programs is like two steps forward and two steps back. I will wait for Tracktion to improve.
