Just curious, but how close do YOU get your samples to make them work the best? I've been zooming in and cutting samples right at the first sample before the silence ends at the beginning of a sample. Am I just being too anal about this?

Well, keep in mind that differences in time that seem huge on a wave editor can be impossible to actually perceive with ones ears in real time. To me, differences of .002 seconds or less are inaudible with most material. Others may differ on this.

The best test I know of is to load the sample into Tracktions sampler and play it at the pitch it loads at. If it feels 'in time', without perceivable latency, it will work.

The general rule would be the sharper the transient, the closer you will want to be to the first sample.

I'll have to experiment then. Between the tools listed above, I will have what I need. I've been messing with the Wavosaur tools as well, and it seems to do pretty well too.

I might consider ReCycle down the road if needed. I've also seen Samplit, but that's only for when you are recording IN to the program, and doesn't import samples. So prerecorded stuff isn't possible there.

If you want more than what Wave Surgeon offers, for free, I'd say you're a bit ambitious. :D

Post

I'm not wanting free, but affordable. I just can't afford something like Recycle or Phatmatik Pro.

the site seems to be down, but beatcreator would be a great option. if you happen to have vsampler: check the slicing options, they are quite powerful and it also has a usable audio editor.

Beatcreator is like $250, no? Or are you talking about the smaller brother that they sell on the Image-Line site? If so, I installed that one, and the demo won't run because it's "unregistered". Well, I can't find anywhere to get any registration information for the demo. So I couldn't even try it.

no, beatcreator is 99usd, still available through the image line shop: http://support.flstudio.com/jshop/shop. ... er=Default

the more expansive one is beatquantizer, but you will justr need the extra features if you do multitrack slicing. beatcreator is in some aspects even ahead of recyle and not comparable to the beatslicer in fl studio.

Post

Oh, I understand. There are three levels. Beatslicer is $35, and Beatcreator is $99. So it is a bigger brother, but not the highest. That's where I was wrong.

I'll check it out as long as the demo will run for me. The $35 one is the one I was trying before.

Do you REALLY need more than what Wave surgeon offers? What are you tryig to slice? Are you working on a song that requires slicing more than what WS does, or are you just shopping for better tools (which is an endless, useless process)..

Post

That's the thing. I'm not sure EXACTLY how much power I need, and don't have the money to just spend on something I don't need to spend it on. Which is why I haven't bought anything yet.

I'm not actually doing beatslicing with it. I'm taking recorded samples that are recorded one after another for the purpose of being a particular velocity layer or a certain drum kit piece with several velocity layers, or whatever. Then I'm wanting to slice those with enough precision that when I insert them into a sampler, it sounds nice and tight. Which also means that I need to make sure there isn't a leading silence, or too much trailing silence. Otherwise, the sample libraries will be very sloppy.

Then I'm needing to at least have SOME sequential numbering system. I would prefer to have a way of using a specific convention, but I can use a batch renamer for that if needed.

So I'll be using Wave Surgeon more, absolutely. As long as it gets precise enough it will work. I have heard of FreeCycle, and I do use some Linux, but I don't want to boot that up just to slice some stuff. Otherwise, I would use it.

So I'm wanting to spend as little as possible, especially since I'm in the market for a bass guitar sample set. I'm even having to sell some things to get it(anyone want EXT?).

So in this case, I'm not looking for better tools just to have the best. I don't need ALL those functions, and wouldn't know what to do with half of them anyways.

Have you thought of starting to get to work with WS, trying to create whatever it is you're creating, and then when you stumble upon a block, looking for ways around it? Just throwing around ideas, but you might already have free stuff that does all you want, and you might not know about it unless you try it out.

Post

That's probably how I will go about it. And it's a smart idea. Sometimes it's tempting to look for "something better" when you don't need it, and I don't want that here.

So thanks for the help, and hopefully WS will be everything I need. Do you use it yourself?

talking about this, I'm working on a new drum stretching/filling for the next Edison. Here's the amen break at half tempo:

I must say, regardless of if I get it or not, Edison looks sweet. If I don't get it now, it may likely be a pack I get later. I have to limit myself and buy things over time, so we'll see.

I wish it was for sale by itself though. I don't really need anything at all in the Juicepack except for it.

But I understand the bundle concept, so I'm not complaining. It's a great value, no doubt. Just not all tools that I need.

Cheers!
