But we do not, really. For the most part, yes, things are available in 64-bit. But there are a few stragglers (the wonderful NI Pro53 comes to mind) that will never go to 64-bit, so there's a need (at least on my DAW) to keep the 32-bit modules in the DAW's search path.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\VST3

VST3 has its own default location that is different from VST 2. Steinberg actually gave it more thought this time around and came up with a standard location that makes sense on the PC (I don't know what the Mac convention is, but I suspect it's similar).

Yes, it's the same on OSX. About the 32/64 - yes, there are some stragglers, in which case you can either not use them and find something similar, or just have to deal with it. From what I know, every reasonable host should understand difference between 32-bit and 64-bit plugins and choose the right one...if not, then it can be considered a bug in that host.
