Thanks and congrats for the release! I really appreciate you adding the CC map and init state, the sound was always there but opening it CC-mapped and with my own default state improves the usability so much.

Manual seems nice and thorough, and the sine waveform is a very welcome addition.

Idk what's going on here these days, it's an awesome, complete synth with unique and imho extremely charming character for 0 euros, these used to be big deal here on KVR.

I think everyone has a lot of stuff available to them today to do much more than everything they need. People tend to have relative standards and so with the bar raised above head height the only place people can think is way up in the clouds; somewhere imaginary and impractical.

There are quite a few things that are still to be improved about Xhip. I'm just not expecting to see it mentioned much.

I suspect even a really highly functioning "everything synth" will get very little attention these days without also being trendy. That just comes down to luck.

That has never been a "good" thing for a free synth though :) Quiet is actually nice. It allows me to get real work done without fussing over unimportant details.

I havent tried this for years, maybe its time to give it a go. I was always dubious about it being in what seemed a never ending alpha/beta stage...

Post

Is that bad? It means even if ten years from now we're using gamma-quantum-atomic-phasenine supercomputers in virtual-quadraspace it'll still have a version of Xhip that works.

You though can continue using stable (beta) version 7, 8 or 49 if you just want to use it for production.

If you want to work with the development (alpha) version and get or suggest the latest features, handle testing and bug-reports you can do that too!

They're just not the same version which is a really important difference from a lot of mainstream software that forces all the users to bug-test production releases.

My concerns at the time were reliability and compatibilty. I didnt have time to test it much...

Seemed like a decent synth that would be a good workhorse. Ive got more time these days, so i'll prob grab it soon.

Post

Well never use the alpha version if you want those two: reliability means very well tested (beta / stable / production) and compatibility is basically the same thing.

If you want compatibility with new untested systems that the stable version doesn't support though the place to ask for that (OSX, Linux, AU, etc) to be newly added is the unstable (alpha) version. That's because we can't push users of the stable version to test our new features when the stable version works 100% on the existing supported systems with the existing and very well tested features.

Yes, i get all that. Like i said, i didnt have much time to try for myself way back.

Bugreport,
When I use the compressor in Xhip and use the sidechain switch it crashes FLStudio 11 (32 bit) on windows7 :(

And thank you aciddose for this great sounding synth :tu:

Post

Hmm I thought I'd fixed that. The sidechain switch can't work anyway (nowhere to get the signal) but the effects include a "if sidechain input = null, sidechain input = main input".

You can get a fixed version (32-bit) here:
http://xhip.net/alpha/

The 64-bit version also had the issue because I only passed two input channels to the effects without padding with zeros. The 64-bit version just added this padding on its own by coincidence :)

Let me know if that fixes it. I need to make a few more changes and I'll then do some testing before I release a fixed v8a.

The init bank and reset options have been removed. Reset was never completed so that doesn't matter, but if you'd saved an init bank it would be best to load and save it as a file with the old version so you can access it afterward. Otherwise it'll be in your user profile / app data / roaming / xhip / synth / init.xhipbank ; it'll be ignored from now on.

Also there is a far more significant issue with the 2x band-pass filter mode with high res and maximum input levels that I still need to fix. I'll probably just use the quick & dirty bitshift solution for now since any other fix will take some time.

I'd also like to add the "getting started" to the installer. I realize now that I've been using NSIS in "oldschool mode" and it can actually display RTF files and other features.

Yep this fixed version works ! :tu: Thanks.

with Linux in the works does this mean a Mac OSX version to follow? :hyper:

Post

Yes, I already have an OSX compatible version working without the GUI, and I've wrapped it successfully in symbiosis. Unfortunately there is a ton of work left to do to port the GUI, which means expecting it to appear any time soon probably isn't a good idea.

See this thread: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=493035

I've been working on several other features to release along with the Linux and MacOS versions most likely in ~spring next year (give or take a decade of course!) which are quite huge improvements. I don't own an Apple PC so it's a bit difficult for me to do any porting, write new code (OSX GUI) or test and fix issues; let alone find motivation to work on such difficult tasks when I never really even use Xhip on Windows often enough to benefit from all the work.

I think the only thing that motivates me to continue to work on Xhip is really just the sunk cost fallacy as I hardly ever use it myself these days.

( randomizer is gone :? , not a big deal, there´s hosts that do it i know, just the host i use also remove it from one version to another  , but i can live like a said not a big deal)

Post

You mean the preset "randomize" function? That is still in there, I just commented out the menu option for it because the results it produces are absolutely awful.

If you like I could enable it and upload a new alpha version... before I release it with that in an official version though I'd like to create a more complicated preset generator that uses specific ranges for parameters.

For example a "ressy bass" tends to have certain properties: short attack, short to medium decay, medium sustain, medium-high Q, low-pass mode, bass-boosting (with 2nd filter), sub-oscillator or detune and a few other properties that it _never_ has like a very long attack, high-pass mode where bass can never pass, no decay stage (sustain = 100%) in the cutoff modulating envelope and so on.

It should be possible to come up with sets of rules like "must", "must not" and lists of probabilities/skews for boolean options (ring-mod, xmod, noise, pitched attack envelope) and all other variable-range parameters.

That would produce fantastic results and would even allow you to type in a preset name like "wobbly res bass" and "randomize suited to preset name" until you get the result you're looking for. In the opposite direction it would allow "randomize suited preset name" by detecting that you've got a bass sound and naming it something like "cactus bass" or "whistle bass".

That's a bit of work though!

thanks for answer! great to see it (the randomize) still lives :) . "before I release it with that in an official version though I'd like to create a more complicated preset generator that uses specific ranges for parameters", that´s good to know!!, "If you like I could enable it and upload a new alpha version" if that´s not to much to ask..if you could release at least one of the alphas with the random enable it before you feel confortable to release it in a final version.( and there´s no need to do it right away, still got one alpha pre-v8 that has it enable, when you want to test new things in a new alpha and if you remember to enable it , it´s just fine)
thanks !
