The one I can remember the last crash was Smack Attack... for Fabfilter it was mostly Pro-Q2...

As I said, the crashes coming completely random... for me, there was no way to replicate a certain crash... sometimes it was by opening the GUI, sometimes by doing completely plugin unrelated stuff...

Random crashes are a bugger. I've not got Smack attack, or any fabfilter stuff myself. Not sure if i'm going to stick with Waves stuff, the Waves Update Plan cost seems like a massive con. Although they have a few plugs I do really like

when i interpret "chopping audio" as the basic editing workflow for audiofiles in waveform (cut, fades, crossfades, and doing those things elegantly and fast!) i can absolutely relate to the statement made by OP.
it is not "non-existent", but surely a weak point of waveform. i already made my points in lengthy threads and very detailed description of possible enhancements to support in the last years.
i really know waveform/tracktion well since years and tried all i could to adapt to its tools and get fast in editing for audiofiles, but it is just not on par in that regard with some other daws (mainly samplitude in my case). for recording-projects, that may need some more complex editing afterwards (full bands, 8+ tracks, need for cutting/crossfading different parts together, editing out some bad notes here and there, ...), i don't know ... not impossible, but for me too slow and complicated in workflow.

that said: waveform is a great tool for me, to throw together song ideas and making sketches of things i imagine. so more of a creative tool for experimenting. i reach for it pretty often.
with a bit of "getting used to", i could imagine it to be a valuable environment for your songwriting/songsketching needs, david (if that is what you imagine to use it for).
i also like to have different "environments"(programs in this case) for different things i do, keeps me flowing in a good way :)

sidepoint: it is also a daw i recommend to beginners, that want to learn about computer and audio. if music students learning from me express interest in that regard, i use tracktion/waveform to get them going. they understand things faster than with other daws i've tried in that case.

whatever you decide, may it be the right thing for you.

So i put some time and work in (thanks for all the suggestions btw) and am much better at navigating it now. I really do love the software. It really is truly modern through and through. it doesnt rely on many of the conventions that we are used to, so it take a minute to get used to.
I cant quuite work out what it was designed for - some (reaper) work really well with keyboard - you never have to use the mouse.
Some work great with touch screen. Some work well with a controller.

I get the impression this was designed to work well with a laptop trackpad. What do you think?
The thing i still dont like is - using the playback cursor for everything. This is somethingi never ever do in any other programme.
And bylack of audio editing i mean - look at studio one, its multi tool...the different ways you can slice and dice audio.

I now actually think the best solution for this is bitwig - it combines the best of clip based approach to audio, with traditional slicing and dicing.
You can edit audio within a clip. its seriously amazing.

since buying waveform i have learned that bitwig has most of the same features, is more stable, has amaaaaazing modulators, and works like a vastly improved ableton. with tons more workflow improvements.

Also here is my biggest problem with waveform - automation.
On paper it has everything. You can even draw lfo waves, awesome. But its painfully slow to set up.
With bitwig or ableton, if you touch a parameter, the lane just shows up. This speeds up automation duties tenfold. If you are like me and you automate everything, waveform is very very slow. Lots of trawling through big big lists.
Also its clunky in action.....i want to click and drag and have it snap to grid. I want to hit a modifier to curve and i want another modifier for 'move all points'
if you look at how bitwig does this - perfect. Its what i always loved about ableton, but ableton never had curves. So all in all, ill keep waveform and keep at it, but its not able to be my main system atm. most of the projectsi created with it wont open now, as it has serious problems with my plugin collection (also crashes a lot)

Didnt really wanna write some of that on a public forum - cos i love waveform and the company and i want to support them into the future, they are innovating and i support that. But i have to have something more sturdy as my no.1
