Wow, this can't be a real, contemporary DAW software in 2020? :scared:
I mean the spec sheet looks modern, but that GUI is straight from early 90's :D

Yes and no. Yes, I am not familiar with the DAWs, since I'm demo'ing them all for the first time ever or since many years ago. Yes, to a degree I want something that is intuitive, or at least similar to what I am use to (FL Studio). But no, I don't think FL Studio is exactly working out of the box.

It took me many years to find what I wanted to do and customize FL Studio to my liking. Linking channels to tracks, to FX channels, to automation clips scattered everywhere in the playlist...not very intuitive and took me a few days to get use to. So far, Reaper seems to be very easy to customize and it's simple, non-cluttered interface with organized menus is working out great so far.

I am sure I am going to find something missing in Reaper that I loved in FL Studio. The sample browser, for example. But I have 3rd party plugins that can take care of that. We'll see!

Thx for the hint...
But then there is another problem... you cannot set up properly CTRL+ Left drag for marquee selecting notes as the "midi editor" section has only right drag as available options and the other sections doesn´t work right for that tasks...

Nevertheless... I think Reaper is the one you can set up closest to how the tools in FLS work... (while I don´t have any clue about Cakewalk and it´s smart tool configuration) :tu:

The sample browser doesn´t have a tree view... ok... but other than that it works for me very very similar ... like having a right click menu for different options, right arrow for fast retriggering of samples, auto play for selecting samples...

What do you miss there???

It goes even far far deeper than the one of FLS with having a proper waveform display, choosing which part to play/ insert into the project, timestretch on/off, making databases, every place searchable/selectable without having to configure folders first, easy drag n drop for making folder shortcuts for the left pane...etc...etc...

No, I mean you seem to expect other DAWs working out-of-the-box like FL did (after you've learned it and set up to your liking). I mean that's a very common error with people changing DAWs - thay come here & ask "how do I do [...] in X like I was doing for years in Y" without really bothering to investigate and understand the core differences in architecture, design principles, paradigms. Despite all of them being "DAWs" as a type of software , they were not all created for the same reasons, workflows, even music styles. I like to think there's always a reason why certain function is implemented like it is, so my approach is to understand why this is the case and adjust my workflow (if possible), rather than force my old habits onto a new software. Also, there must've been a reason you're looking to switch from FL to something else, so it's often necessary to sacrifice some things for others, that at given stage are more important for you. Otherwise it doesn't make sense switching :)

The most annoying things in ableton's piano roll is that its window state is shared with arrangement space and audio clip editor. When you changed the size of audio clip editor piano roll is affected. No way to avoid this.

in Studio One using the Paint tool don't have to use even the right click, everything is on the left one, draw/resize/erase, selection tool also can be reached keep pressing the cmd+ one

Mostdaws ( cubase , studio one , abletonetcc ) you can draw using the cursor/select while holding shift instead of using the pencil .
It's a good practice to select any available drawing tool ( cursor , pencil , eraser ) and try each one while holding , ctrl , shift, alt or any combinatin of those etc...

btw. the ability of S1(and the others vs FL) to able to open both types(and score one is a lightweight one) of the editor at the same time is priceless

creating far easier using the score one (can see the intervals of the given scale) modifying is better with the piano roll

Yeah, it's indeed a really lightweight and flexible piece of software. In fact it's so customizable that you can forget to actually make music with it and instead just customize EVERYTHING.

Now check out SWS extensions and Reapack and your mind will be blown.

That should be possible as well.

MIDI piano roll > left drag > change Ctrl to "Marquee select notes (just select)"

Or does FL do something special with its marquee selection?

Post

Though limited, I find Ableton Live PR easy to put in notes. Short cuts to change the grid, paint tool, marquee selection, compress expand etc

Take look at this guy FL Studio 20 Tutorial Playlist.
For the first time since I own FL (20+ years of Open/Quit maneuvers :hihi: ) I was able to really enjoy the immense hidden power of this DAW.
This guy really knows his stuff. Seriously!

and maybe this

Btw, that trick (5:18) with Edison it's now a good part of my Edison VST usage.
