I see they had issues in the past with alt right groups. I did read that. However, seems like they have a handle on it

It also looks like it offers the option to access discord within the browser

Right, Discord is centralized. They control all Discord instances ("servers"). You don't own your Discord instance and they can shut it down for whatever reason.

Meanwhile, the Matrix protocol ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matrix_(protocol) ) offers an open source, decentralized, end-to-end-secured version of this. Which clients (apps) like Mastodon and Element (formerly riot.im) can freely use and talk to each other in a federated manner. There's even a Matrix bridge for the Discord app. The only trouble then is the Discord app. Though still, Matrix doesn't discriminate.
It's kinda like modern era, rich media chat meets the Tor network.

It's totally possible to use Discord just through the browser and without the app.

The average person who just wants to join a music community to keep themselves informed about plugins, and what not, will be perfectly happy with Discord. What you are talking about about, the average person probably doesnt know about, or care about. If that suits you to use that platform, thats great. I dont think that any plugin company, or music artist who wants to engage with their fanbase sort of like how they integrate Patreon, will ever use what you are referring to, nor would they ever want to considering Discord offers a very powerful tool.

Look at the Surge community, and how Evil Dragon interacts with users who offer feature suggestions, and bugs for Surge. Discord is just a great platform.

Yeah, that'll happen if you hit the quotes-button, meaning to edit your post, instead of the pencil. I've done it a few times ...

Anyway, yeah ... I understand. I know the prevalent attitude. I'm just making a case for alternatives.
Comparison of cross-platform instant messaging clients ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compariso ... ng_clients )
Comparison of instant messaging protocols ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compariso ... _protocols )

Hah! I'd have no reason to complain either unless I ran into issues with Discord. At which point, I pulled that thread and it led someplace.

Funny thing too, is that after a while, their support came back and said 'you're unblocked now, go ahead and login. We're not going to force you to install the app after all.' Hah!
Of course, I was done. There was no way I'd invest myself after being jerked around like that.

Anyway, to each his own.

Discord views the app as 2FA. Most people just install it, first thing, no big deal.
I only used the web portal. I never abused anything, I logged in all of three times and then they threw this 'install the app or contact support' error at me. I contacted support. Hah, and then through my conversation with them it became clear that they cared a lot about having that app installed on my device.
I'm just telling you my experience.

The challenge with wanting to reach people is you gotta use what poses low or no-barrier access for the majority of the audience.
It's the only reason why a not insignificant part of the user base of various social platforms use them, despite disliking the venue.

Discord currently happens to be the tool combining a real time feature set with message persistence, file repository etc. for large concurrent audiences with by far the widest spread adoption.

This is why I laid the groundwork for a sound design focused community there - the point is to reach as many people as possible in the real time with persistence format.

I understand.
To be clear, the concern I raise is that Discord is able to spoil your hard work at any time. For instance, they could get uppity about copyright stuff--sampled music perhaps--and bam ... Who knows? They can change the rules at anytime and deactivate you.
Hah! This in fact happened just lately with a treadmill if you can believe it: https://finance.yahoo.com/news/peloton- ... 26672.html
It's the mentality I'm pointing out.

By the way, Element (open source, non-spyware, Discord-like app) allows you to connect to Discord instances ( https://element.io/blog/ems-brings-harmony-to-discord/ ). The project made an official bridge ...
Maybe I could try to join your Discord instance via Element? It'd be interesting to see.

Maybe you could start a private discord for beta testers (no clue how U-he's testing process works) but then when it's released, open up the discord publicly? this worked really well with Vital, created a real grassroots community of Vital evangelists.

To your point, I read an article today that Discord is riddled with hackers. My apologies, you are in fact right. I think Discord may have a bit of a problem on their hands

No need for apology. Honestly, I hate running around sounding like I do sometimes ...
Funny enough, I just had a similar experience with Microsoft, signing up for their email delivery troubleshooting service (SNDS, for postmasters). I created an account, they asked for personal info, including my DoB! I login all of two times and on my third, the system says 'you've violated our terms, we need to verify your phone number now, otherwise you're blocked!', something like this. Of course, no such thing on my part; my entire purpose of signing up was to establish a good reputation for my IP, to allow email delivery to outlook, live, hotmail, etc. ... Total crap--the same thing Discord did to me!

Twice Microsoft has blocked me from using Skype. No explanation why, nothing obvious I did. In both cases I was not able to get my account un-blocked even after many emails and fruitless phone calls. Their system is truly hellish!
