Decent Sampler Waveform Free 13 Waveform Pro 13

Post

One more update - I have DS working again in W12 (I wasn't dreaming earlier!). See attached screenshot.

All I have done is reboot my laptop, opened an existing test edit in W12 and added the DS VST2 (plugin sandbox is disabled). It is sitting there quite happily producing sounds.

So it can work, but mostly seems to wreak havoc. I'd love to have more confidence in it as there are some great free sample packs available for this plugin.

@unholyeyebrows Good news There is a sandbox update in the private beta and I can confirm that Decent Sampler is indeed working with sandboxing enabled . :)

@unholyeyebrows I almost thought that you had switched to using Ableton with the skin :) The new theme editor is amazing :) ... glad you can at least run DS now. Hopefully the newest update will be released to the public soon .

Post

I love the light theme - it was never quite right in W11 but in W12 they've pretty much nailed it.

I wouldn't say I have DS running in any way stably currently - I'm too scared to touch it! I'll definitely look out for the next W12 release and give DS a decent (pun intended) work out in the sandbox.

Happy days!

Yes I'm usually a total dark mode for every GUI kind of person, but I do love this light theme. The Waveform_12 GUI overhaul looks amazing in general, it did take a bit of time to get used to the clean interface, and I've seen a few complaints on here about it, but it does grow on you and you get used to it.

I think DS definitely has a few minor bugs, ( I would have to test more on a variety of hosts ) but it is a really cool plugin .

Yes I'd be the same , just leave it alone if it's working. :)

Do you use Vital synth at all ? I'm finding both version 1.0.7 and 1.0.8 really buggy in all Linux Daws I use. I've reported a crash log months ago to the developer but he never replied, tho he has mentioned on other threads that he was rewriting a lot of the core code.

Post

I have purchased Vital and have it installed but have only dabbled with it to date. Haven't pushed it hard enough to squeeze out any bugs. Now I'm inspired by W12 I might take Vital for a proper spin and see what breaks!

Thanks again for the info on the W12 beta.

Hi. I'm the developer of Decent Sampler. I'm working on trying to resolve the Tracktion Waveform issues. Frustratingly, it is working fine for me, so it is very hard for me to debug. Is everybody testing with DS 1.4.14? I ask only because a lot of the initial network stuff that DS does on launch got moved to a background thread in the latest version.

Post

Hey - huge thanks for giving this a look. Decent Sampler is totally awesome! I'm on 1.4.13 - in all this excitement I missed the update. Let me check 1.4.14 now.

Hi - it is still crashing for me. WF12.0.52 / DS 1.4.14 (both VST2 and VST3) / Ubuntu 21.10 fully patched.

Basically I open WF12, create a new blank project and insert DS on a new track. With sandboxing disabled WF crashes immediately I drag DS onto a track. Other plugins (TAL and u-he) are fine in the same project.

OK - perhaps a bit of useful data. I seem to be able to make the problem come and go by switching WF12 between OpenGL and software rendering. With software rendering DS seems to reliably crash WF. With OpenGL rendering DS seems to work fine (based on some simple tests).

I'm on a Dell XPS15 with NVIDIA hybrid graphics in case this is relevant. I run it in 'on demand' mode.

This might explain why I consistently saw DS craching in WF11 since that would freeze when I chose OpenGL so I always ran in software rendering mode. Now in WF12 OpenGL seems to work better hence why I can now change between the two.

I hope this helps. I'll keep testing in case I can narrow it down further. If there is any debugging data I can collect please let me know.

Thanks
Nick

Just duplicated the same issue on my Surface Go, also running Ubuntu, WF12 and latest DS. This only has Intel graphics so rules out an NVIDIA problem. DS consistently crashes WF with software rendering but seems stable with OpenGL rendering.

@dhilowitz Thanks for working on getting this issue fixed :) , I guess this will be relevant for people that don't upgrade Waveform or are using the free version 11.

oops looks like I'm way behind the master branch, still on version 1.4.9 [ I'll upgrade now ]

Tho this version is behaving well now with the latest beta testing version here ( which will get pushed to the public soon ).

I'll report back here soon after a bit of testing with version 1.4.14

Post

Ok new version installed, it does seem to load a lot faster , this plugin has some lush sounds , so I will be using it .

I'm only testing on a low powered intel celeron based netbook for now, but may be a good indicator as to how your plugin performs on low end machines .

I think previous Waveform sandbox crashes could have been CPU spikes which I notice I get from your plugin. It seems to occupy 100% CPU according to Waveform's graph [ I'll look into debugging this, and I actually have a few zombie processes on here as I didn't reboot from a few incidents earlier today and they could be affecting my overall performance on this machine ]

I will give DS a good bit of testing over the next few days on this box and another more powerful machine, and if there are any issues i will find them :)

Post

@mikoatkvr any chance you can check your graphics rendering settings in Waveform as per my earlier posts? Would be interesting if you can verify if Software rendering causes DS to crash and OpenGL does not. Thanks.

@unholyeyebrows I have always been running Waveform using 'Software rendering' as I don't have a machine anymore with a dedicated graphics card. [ I bricked my Acer nitro 5 , long story ]

My understanding at least is that OpenGL is aimed more for direct rendering through the DGC , although some reading on the subject seems to point to the fact that it can/does work on the internal graphics card.

Someone with more knowledge on the subject might chime in here.

Anyway I'll switch the setting to OpenGL for testing to see.
