I do extend the in and out markers so that the sound doesn't get lopped off on a note just before the beat or anything that decays away past the out marker. Also good for blending in different clips.
But pause would be great where you need to, say, deal with an outside noise without having to stop and restart everything...which is what happened to me yesterday.

Hmm... Bummer!! Yeah, man -All we need is a pause button!!Watchful wrote: Sun Nov 06, 2022 12:53 pm I do extend the in and out markers so that the sound doesn't get lopped off on a note just before the beat or anything that decays away past the out marker. Also good for blending in different clips.

How do I create the comp clip from individual clips?? I thought that if I dragged a clip from one track and just layered it over another that it would do this automatically -but no "+" sign appeared. Just have two clips sandwiched ontop of eachother, now...pough wrote: Fri Nov 04, 2022 1:53 amNot exactly. The little "+" sign only shows up when clips have been combined into a comped clip. That happens by default (for audio) when you are recording in looped mode. You can also create a comped clip from individual clips. Once you have a comp clip, it will always show the little "+" even if you're no longer in loop mode.tmaworks wrote: Thu Nov 03, 2022 11:59 pm Everybody is telling me that the little "+" sign is only visible in loop mode.
The comp feature in loop mode is just FANTASTIC, but it's not always convenient for me to record in loop mode. If I could drag clips on top of one another like you mentioned and STILL get the ability to comp those clips, then that would negate the need for me to use loop mode.

If y9u drag,a,clip onto another they just overlap...sometimes, that's creatively desirable.
Making a comp clip from two different tracks is indeed possible. Select the clips in the different tracks (you're not limited to two) and look for the menu item to create a comp group from the selected tracks down in the properties pane (the one that goes across the bottom of the screen).

Man, I just can't find it -Where is it?? -I found "group selected clips" and "group selected tracks", but those don't seem to be working how I'd expect them to... What are those?? Those commands don't seem to be doing anything when i select them, which is strange...Watchful wrote: Fri Nov 25, 2022 1:57 pm If y9u drag,a,clip onto another they just overlap...sometimes, that's creatively desirable.

Specific steps:
1. Line up the clips you want to pack into a comp so their start times are the same (probably this is already the case)
2. Shift+click the clips you want included
3. In the properties pane, toward the right, look for Pack Clips to Takes >
4. For safety's sake, pick Leave original clips
5. Waveform will process this for a few seconds or less, and create a new clip on top of the top-most clip. Not sure why it does this because it can be hard to find for a first-timer, but you can drag any clips in the way to a different track... and you'll have your comp, right down to the little + in the lower right.
You can have the comp delete the original takes ("Replace original takes")...but, I dunno. I like to keep original takes until I'm absolutely sure I won't need them again. Sometimes a spoiled take later on lets you grab or slice out a chunk from a previous but unused take, and those can be life-savers.

Don't forget rule #1: the Control Panel is by default in Useless Mode. You need to expand it to be in Useful Mode, after which a plethora of useful options will be available to you. Until then, "where the f**k can I find that?" will be your mantra.
Surely there must be consensus by now...

Haha!
Thanks, Watchful!! -Never would've found that out on my own.
Thanks.
I tried it both ways -When you DON'T replace original take the tracks stack on top of each other and you get those ghost tracks. I'm assuming... those are the original takes sitting under there silent?? -Couldn't tell if I could hear them or not...
When I DID replace the original takes, of course, there were no ghost takes underneath, and it was exactly like doing a normal take in loop mode -A little cleaner, which I liked, but yeah -You risk losing the original takes... Is there a way to do it without having the original takes underneath in ghost mode like that?? They just kinda confuse the situation visually...

Right! -Have been using it A LOT -But, that thing that watchful said -The "Pack Clips to Take" thing -I NEVER would've found that on my own -Not in a million years...pough wrote: Fri Nov 25, 2022 6:09 pm Don't forget rule #1: the Control Panel is by default in Useless Mode. Now-If they can only get their undo feature/ menu to work right! Then we'd be talking!!!

I don't know why the new comp clip sits on top of the first take--if it were me, and it isn't, I would have Waveform create a new track to hold just the new comp clip: exactly like when you burst a comp clip, it creates separate tracks underneath.
So no, I don't believe you can create a comp clip that isn't hard to spot at first!

In this case, I might just duplicate all the clips I want to comp so I have a backup of them that way, and then just create the comp take the destructive way -Without saving the original clips. It's just way better visually...
Being able to do this (take various clips and make a comp track from them) is kind of a game changer -Means you're not restricted to the constraints of loop mode... No need for a "pause" button anymore, I guess??

If you're working on getting a short section just right, loop mode is ideal. If you're looping a 5-10 minute piece, less so; although depends if you have to keep running back to your computer for restarting each take if not in loop mode.
... unless you have some other handy little "controller" of some kind. You CAN actually use any old or cheap MIDI keyboard (whether it has buttons or not), by mapping, like C to stop, D to play, E to record, F to rewind...

yeah, I mean -I'm just sitting at the drum kit and tracking through songs. It's not a big deal for me to just stop recording and then split all the tracks afterwards -Or just drag the clips to new tracks right then and there... My laptop is right next to me...Peter Widdicombe wrote: Sat Nov 26, 2022 3:48 am If you're working on getting a short section just right, loop mode is ideal. But, yeah, the songs are longer and I'm not doing any punching in -My goal is to just get through some takes and then comp the best parts when I need to. Thing is that I'm recording with 14 mics or so, so three takes of that is a lot of clips...

I'd like a pause button. When you're doing multiple takes and there's a medium-length interruption, it would be nice to pause, deal with the issue, and pick up about where you left off.
Without, you need to stop and even start over. Can you combine two sets of looped clips? I'm reluctant to experiment and suspect you can't.
Following on to Peter's advice, I strongly recommend shorter loops. Instead of doing lengthy sections of a track, break them up into smaller pieces when looping/comping. It's easier to manage!

Yeah -You make a good point about the pause button. I contacted the guy I'm in touch with at Tracktion and asked him how quick of a fix it'd be -Hasn't gotten back to me yet, but i suspect he's out on Holiday...Watchful wrote: Sat Nov 26, 2022 4:43 am I'd like a pause button. Would have no idea how combining two sets of looped tracks would work... Ha! Sounds wacky!
So, with the shorter loops I'm not quite sure what you're talking about -Are you suggesting that instead of doing straight run throughs of songs that I do the song in chunks?? Yeah, not quite sure what ya'll are saying there...
