thanks valley - great - I get it. I hadn't understood the manage rack presets button / load preset rack menu item (i'm still a little foggy...)
the text editor stuff is very neat - kudos to Jules for making the file system transparent and based on standards. good man!
I guess what Bao and I are looking for would be a little utility that would collect project-wide preset files and let you access them from any edit. Likewise empty track files w/ filter setups would be very useful. The workarounds you suggest will do fine although I hate to move through the file system except when I can help it.

well once you have added the rack as a preset, it becomes avaiable to *all* projects on your system, so importing racks from some kind of central repository is a one time operation.
