This theme and config file (which affects menus, toolbars) can't be recommended enough from me. It effectively turns the mess that is Reaper (it's default state) into a very well organised DAW with proper consideration of work flow and overall feel.

It's somewhat misleadingly placed in the 'newbieland' section of the forum - it's not a newbie thing at all - it's just a very well thought out re-organisation of the whole environment. I now use it as my default set-up.

The problem with things like this is that you've now rendered a lot of the manual useless, and if you ask for help then you are pretty much on your own figuring it out anyway. Then there's the issues of these setups being broken in new updates.do_androids_dream wrote:This theme and config file (which affects menus, toolbars) can't be recommended enough from me. It is neat that you can change Reaper this much, but that ability comes along with its own problems.

Nobody forces you to use the custom menus there. You can just use the theme if you want to.
Also, as far as I can recall, an update never broke my custom menus, or Reaper preferences (unless there was a change in preferences, but that was promptly mentioned on the forums along with caveats), or themes.

As touched upon by ED it's all optional and you can tick a box which allows the original menus to be available from a drop down menu at the bottom of each menu list if you need to reference things in the manual. With an environment like this it's never going to ideal with regards to the manual if you change things around a lot - I can't really see a way around that.Robert Randolph wrote:The problem with things like this is that you've now rendered a lot of the manual useless, and if you ask for help then you are pretty much on your own figuring it out anyway. Reaper very rarely breaks things with updates as far as I've seen - one of the great things about it is that backwards compatibility seems to be a top priority of the devs.

It seems this Walter theme system in Reaper is going a bit far, regarding what you affect with the theme. Just the looks of controls, colors, backgrounds etc is enough for a theme - not remove or add controls etc, that is kind of up to devs.do_androids_dream wrote:As touched upon by ED it's all optional and you can tick a box which allows the original menus to be available from a drop down menu at the bottom of each menu list if you need to reference things in the manual. So if theme designer are not fully musicians and see what controls are to be available in every part of gui - you end up with half good themes that inhibit you - and as Randolph pointed out, also create different look for things in manuals compared to gui.
Not even Albertxx with his themes are fully implemented. Got version 3 of his ProXtoolsGold now, but have not user Reaper for years, so no good now. Konzentration(was i Jonas somebody author) was pretty good, apart from that I/O button from track panels disappeared so you could no longer drag-n-drop sends to other tracks as original theme allow.
Samplitude has a couple of themse to choose from, but problem there was also it affected which controls were there in mixer etc.
For .NET applications I've used VisualStyler which is a splendid thought out product. In a flash you shift looks of things, not altering what is there. You just drag-n-drop that component on you main application form - and it does everything else for you on all other forms. Editor for themes can be used by anyone and covers everything.
Don't know if .NET is good enough for realtime apps like daws or plugins.

I've been critical of Walter in the past for similar reasons - it does give you the potential to break things or make mistakes - but it also gives a lot of power to skilled people to make something great and even improve upon existing defaults. The theme/config I linked to is one of the very few that, I feel, does that.

Not saying that the devs called for it (actually would be the last thing i would expect from them...), rather users. Just wondering that 6 reviews in a week saw the light of day, while there only have been 15 in total since 2011. But hey, maybe just everyone thought it was a good idea to start the new year with a Reaper review.

Reaper uses ffmpeg according to wiki.
Whether it is vulnerable is based on it's use of ffmpeg's "HTTP live streaming" feature. Read the comments of the article to glean more.

Devs should take note of this immediately.

The complete opposite is actually true, there is simply not enough of Reaper available to WALTER for it to be as useful as it could be, until that happens then we will be stuck with semi themed versions of Reaper.lfm wrote:

Semi-themed is better than no theme.
