In the beginning FLS was not MIDI friendly at all. Hence some very cool (and nowhere else to be found) tools were invented: e.g. Formula controller and Peak controller. They show their non-MIDI roots in the simple fact that they don't produce any MIDI-signals to date - but their output is available "system-wide" within FLS.

Together with the already mentioned Riff machine and other helpers it is quite obvious that FLS's roots were neither MIDI nor Audio-oriented (the discontinued Fruity Tracks is evidence here, too). In the early days it was just a very clever and handsome computer application - born and made for computers and respective users.

This has changed a LOT - like Ableton Live for instance changed a lot. There were even users that cried about Live going too much traditional thus leaving its original approach.
I think Lode_Runner might mean "note & controller data" sequencing instead of strictly MIDI. And if you're not using external hardware, real MIDI mostly doesn't even matter.
For integrating MIDI hardware, FL Studio can be very frustrating (the older it is, the worse it gets).

I've possibly been lucky then - never had any problem hooking up MIDI devices to FLS.
Q. Why is a mouse when it spins?
A. The higher the fewer.

You can't record Midi CCs directly, can't do sysex dumps on a track. My AN200 doesn't sync (It works sort of with some MidiOX trickery). Can't use VST editors that need the midi ports without MidiOX either. It doesn' record the MS20 USB patch cables. Sync doesn't work with a lot of iPad apps. Etc. Etc.
I'm not saying that all of it is FL Studio's "fault", but those things all work fine in Cubase.

If e.g. I want to record my Slim Phatty's knob movements, in FL Studio (for all projects), I have to make a Midi Out template & then create generic links for everything.

I used to have a Behringer rotary controller that worked fine.
I now use a couple of Korg Nanocontroller things (or Nanocontroller & a Nanopad), and I've not had any problems with these.

I use an Axiom kb which certain plugs wouldn't see the modwheel without a bit of jiggery-pokery, but the workarounds were pretty easy, and once done could be effectively forgotten about. So yeah, I can concede the implementation isn't tip-top. As I say, I suspect I've been lucky, as I've heard a lot of folks have had niggling issues with MIDI devices and FLS in the past.

With external hardware I didn't mean Midi controllers, but synths, drum machines, sequencers, etc. But even Midi controllers have issues. That Behringer, is that a BCR2000? FL Studio doesn't support 2-way control for it. (so no leds updating when you change a preset in FL Studio)

Post

Yes, the BCR2000. Must admit I never noticed the no-2-way control - not really something that would be a problem for how I work. Can understand it would be for many though.

I got rid of it because it took too much space up in my shoebox room! Much prefer the nano - feels more natural and smooth somehow. I had hoped to get away with using the rotaries on the Axiom, but I couldn't put up with the clicking on those - that, and the acceleration on them made fine-tuning a pain.

I don't have any hardware synths and such, so my setup can be very simple. Which suits FL Studio, I guess.

BTW OP, surely you mean "top DAWG"

"Oooh I dont know. Sounds a bit scary"
"It's not scary. You just lose a sense of who you are and all that sh!t"

When mine was still simple, FL Studio was perfect! And I'm still a happy user, since v3.5. I made this with it yesterday: http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=395642 - but I'm going to do the finishing touches in Cubase.

I have the Nanokontrol (2) too. I wouldn't mind if it was a little bit sturdier & bigger though. :)

Are you sure about the midi ports? I've been using the mkdr editor without issues but they're selectable from within. I thought the midi ports were meant to address things like that anyway.
