Well, if you'd like to be ruthless then I've plenty of ruthlessness in reserve. Just give me a call if you do want some more![]()

Tone2's statement is in the present tense, and they broached the subject themselves. I am asking for clarification about current practices. It is difficult to determine what exactly the Tone2 software does or doesn't do because we don't know how Tone2 defines certain things such as "their property" and "protection".EnGee wrote: Tue May 05, 2020 9:56 pm Why complicates matters?! Tone2 has a friendly protection, demos and support now. The products are very stable.
This is what matter! Keep digging the past has no meaning if things have changed now. We can learn from the past but nothing else. Let's be tolerant little bit![]()
Given Tone2 asserting they will modify their property, what we do not know is whether Tone2 software scans other people's systems for "their property", whether they consider that part of their protection, whether or not there is code that can modify what it thinks is "their property" that does not come with that specific software's installer, whether or not it transmits any information back to Tone2 as to what it finds. I consider this a privacy intrusion regardless of the goals and if you are okay with that then why are you interfering with attempts to clarify whether or not any of this is currently happening?

You don't have an antivirus/firewall or a security suite installed?! Use that if you are so concerned about your privacy!yellowmix wrote: Thu May 07, 2020 12:06 amTone2's statement is in the present tense, and they broached the subject themselves. Personally, I don't have any problem with their software. I install their demoes and uninstall them all the times. I also have two full licenses for two products. I have antivirus and firewall and they warn me of any suspicious attempt. Nothing from Tone2 software! Let them define whatever they want to be "theirs" or not! If there was any attempt to change anything in my system, I would have known. But there is none from Tone2 software (for years now!) I don't know before 10 years or more, because I haven't used their software that time.

yellowmix,
Per another conversation I've recently had with an expert whitehat:
Tone2 is software completely safe.
It is painfully easy to validate that Tone2 software is safe without any disassembly. Many tools are able to hook all api calls and monitor all activity of such software. This is easiest to do with a fresh virtual machine as you can also log all changes made to the system via snapshot comparison. This method is also useful in spotting shellcode and hidden data. There are many many tools to do this, but if you are a newbie like I am, I might suggest ProcessMonitor, as it is free and easy to use.
Anyways, my whitehat has already given the 100% safe to Tone2. It is not invasive at all. You are always free to check yourself, it seems pretty basic to me. There are plenty of other things in the world to be paranoid about, it seems you are making undue concern about Tone2 without any analysis beforehand.

I was around for the train wreck that prompted this thread. I was so turned off that I swore off Tone2. Based on the apology and the promise that the installer is acting appropriately, I'm now in the middle of the road. I will head over and listen to a few demos. And Markus, this thread impressed me significantly. Good work. What is the collective KVR opinion on which synth is the best. I don't do genres. I just want an excellent sounding synth.

Bastiaan! Long time no hear! Nice to know you're still around.
For me, Tone 2's products have always been great. Until I shifted (slightly) away from "Electronic" music to...well, whatever it is I'm doing now, Tone 2's synths made up 3 of my Top 5 go-to synths. And the support has always been great from Troels, Bastiaan and Markus.

Ok, maybe this is off topic little bit, but IMO I advise to download all their demos and see for yourself! There is a slight character similarity between the synths, but I believe it is due to the similarity of the envelopes. Anyway, they have different kind of synthesis. Personally I like a lot Nemesis and RayBlaster, which I have, but I believe Icarus and Electra are the most popular synths. There is also Gladiator (which is in my to buy list). Icarus seems the most recent and maybe the flagship of Tone2. Everyone's favourite is differentoxygenmask wrote: Thu May 07, 2020 1:06 am I was around for the train wreck that prompted this thread. When Tone2 says they will modify files on your system they consider their property, there is a significant amount of ambiguity. No other developer openly publicizes anything remotely close to this.
Note the phrasing is in the present (and continuous) tense. So security analysis of past or current software is irrelevant. It's not a technical question, it is a sales question of what the software is doing now or could do in the future. Only Tone2 can clarify what they mean.
Additionally, you do need to disassemble software to fully audit software. That's the entire point of open source. I'm not asking Tone2 to do an AirWindows, I'm asking for their word that their software doesn't and won't have the possibility of doing what common sense dictates "modifying files" entails. No one else can give this assurance.
