Course you U-HE for creating such a nice sandbox compressor. [raises fist into the air, thunders roll]
Where do I get the funds to buy this thing (intro IIRC 80EUR + MwSt) - it won't be possible for me for a long, long time I'm afraid. Arg!
Nah, on a serious note... just took the most recent beta for a spin. Love what I hear and see. CPU usage is also very low.
Would love to get a manual. I want to know what is possible, what is actually doing "what" (if I can use it as plain digital compressor, or as analog type compressor, what does the saturation do, how can I setup a sound in the "modes" and then further edit in "normal view", etc).
Would also love to see a "rack", where you can put several comps in row (see UAD tricks, with either an LA and 1176 or two 1176 in row).
And while we're at it, another FR: a "DBX 160/165" view (simple VCA).
Also need to take a dive into the "preset section" for Presswerk.
Maybe somebody ported a Neve 33609 or the Abbey Road R124 already, maybe even the RED-3/ISA Comp. (EDIT: so far, not really).
This one could endanger all other compressors I have on my HDD, including Klanghelm's DC8C-2. I mean, LA2A type, 1176 type, Vari Mu type, "digital" type... It's like SATIN - a "clean", low profile, sandbox system. But easier to "get" compared to DC8C-2, especially for not so skilled audio engineers (I'm sure, would DC8C-2 have GUI's like the LA2A/1176/Fairchild, people would be more like "woha, cool" than "wot?!" at first glance).
I also found two possible glitches in Cubase 7.5.20 x86.
Don't know if this was reported yet.
a) if I setup something in the specific modes (i.e. FET/1176) and then switch back to "normal mode", the settings seem to have been ported over (sounds like that at least), but the tweaking knobs and parameters don't match
b) Alt+Mousedrag (copy) of Inserts results in a non-processing plugin. You either need to shut this one off, or change the view mode in order to get the plugin to process again.
Didn't test Presswerk with Wavelab 8 yet.
Oh and, can't this one be used as digital brickwall limiter?
I tried to set up the attack to about 0,01ms (read: instant), but I can only go down to 0,10ms and even with Ratio 20:1 and Threshold -3dB (or even lower), clip mode active, input/output gain at 0, the limiting exceeds -1dBFS?
Like I said - I like what I see, but I'm out of funds.
Though I can imagine that this is the future for U-HE's FX module range - "sandbox environments".

^ Compy, for a limiter try setting the sidechain delay to a negative value... it will go as far as -5 ms

This... is why I'd love to get a manual.
Just saying.

Actually, it is. I was blind.
Then the link from the plugin GUI to the documentation leads to a dead end on Windows.
Will definitely take a closer look at the manual tomorrow. Might clear a question or two.
EDIT:
Did PRESSWERK actually come with presets?
Because I hit the Preset Button, and there were none on my end. (snagged the beta today, 6th Nov)

OK, question on the LA-2A non-lin ratio shape.
I have two "respectable" emulations here that seem to contradict eachother...
One seems to require a positive value and one about the same but negative value...
So which one is the correct one?

After fiddling with Presswerk for a 1/2 hour, found a setting (the default setting with a few tweaks) that sounds better than my CubaseLE4 compressor & limiter settings for vocals. This will probably end up on my Christmas list. Curious what sort of factory presets it will have.

We do some for the next round, and we will certainly have a useful stack in the final version. But since the outcome of compressor use is so much dependent on the actual source, I'd say the best is always to just start using it, twist the knobs and take a listen until it sounds just right.
Of course, we want you to tweak and fiddle as much as possible at this time, since we're in test phase. Problems mostly arise from kicking things hard and getting to know the beast in and out. I guess browsing presets is only a fraction of testing.

Agreed on that end. I'm just wondering though, because there are some listed in the manual, and none in the Beta.
Anyway... is switching from the "modes" (i.e. LA oder 1176) to Normal mode, and Normal Mode "not" catching up in terms of tweaking knobs/values considered a bug? I took a dive into the manual, and there was nothing mentioned (on first look) that switching in between those modes works flawlessly (think Klanghelm DC8C-2), so I tried it anyway (coarse setup with one of the modes, fine tuning with the "normal mode").
And still, a 4th GUI with VCA (DBX 165 or something) would be nice. Though I already hear some people being like "A Distressor as well, please!" and "a modding matrix for the LA2A!", etc. Yes, I am lazy and I go after looks. But hey, it's what I'm used to from using the hardware. And it's great for quick setups.
Else, after messing around a bit, this Sandbox concept really reminds me of the DMG Compassion, with both the concept and low profile of the Klanghelm DC8C-2, plus some ideas from VoS's and TDL's compressors (saturation, the "Int" detection mode). Though I'm sure that the original ideas of "Blockfish" are now in Presswerk as well (another +1 for a Blockfish Preset! Maybe even Sascha's old am-track/am-pulse creations).
In the documentation however, I personally think that it should be mentioned a bit more detailed that both the LA2A and the 1176 "concepts" have "locked thresholds" depending on the used mode (for LA: Comp to Limiter, for 1176: the threshold buttons), which makes up their character. It's shown in the plot, but some might ask "why is that?!". THen again, newbies want the "usual suspects" (LA, 1176, Fairchild, DBX), so... yeah.
And some tutorial videos for "side chaining in Cubase" would be nice. Since you don't offer VST3 this time around, VST2 is a PITA to setup. Unless there is a trick involved with the "channel listen" buttons that I didn't pick up yet.
Now... after watching Urs' Interview with Recording.de, I can only imagine what a possible "sandbox drum machine" might look like - should you really go that route. Though here I can think more on the lines of Plogue's Chipsounds synth. Then again, that's still far, far into a possible future branch.

First post here!!! Long time reader but I post mostly on GS. I have tried today Presswerk for the first time and I have found probably my go to comp for the next time. I use mostly Waves Blue 76, IK White 2A and Slate Vari-MU but Presswerk is doing the same thing, except for the tone shaping (in special the agressive colour of Slate Vari-MU). I've been using the 1176 and MU modes in vocals in today's project and have been pretty awesome. 1176 mode is as trasparent as the Waves Blue 76 and the Vari-MU ... oh all of you know about the MU's magic
. I need to try LA2A mode and play more with the big comp GUI because it seems to give lot of options.
I don't know if it is possible but I need to tell it ... Will be great, maybe not as a free update, but to have more "classic comps" GUIs ... dbx 160/165, distressor, Tubetech cl1b, ssl bus comp, neve 33609, etc ... I know that is lot of to ask for but I will not doubt to pay for a plugin which could do every task (of course all we know that every comp can do lot of tasks, but you know...) which I need to do with so many different plugins, is like "one to rule all of them". Cheers!!!

If someone wants to have a play with some "emulation" patches, here you go: https://app.box.com/s/ilgitlc6007epm834h62
Some of them are better than others but I guess they're usually pretty close from what I can tell.
