Agreed - I do find the newer GUI a little cleaner (but yeah I also prefer the LCD screen look of the older one, I also like the 'dots' around the parameter dials)

This is a belated reply to aciddose
Firstly I'm sorry if my attempt at simplification offended you. I did not mean to imply that the ownership of source code was being sold. IMO the central point of free software is to keep it from being controlled/buried by a single entity. I was referring to distribution of source and trying very hard not to give a technical answer that would be perceived as unclear to most people. The ebay sales I mentioned are about perception being reality. The item descriptions are set up in such a way as to indicate a buyer is purchasing software that is comparable to an expensive commercial competitor. The people buying them believe they are purchasing software and even though the "service" prices are lower than actual purchase prices of commercial software, the typical buyer doesn't know it. They are being deliberately misled. There are almost no sellers (Only one that I've seen) that say that the software they are providing is available for free legal download elsewhere. I also don't think the actual fee that could be charged for the service was mentioned anywhere, so appropriate/legal cost is going to vary. So while I may not agree with most ebay sellers of free software, they are meeting the letter of the license if not the spirit. Personally I feel that the license should be amended to require service sellers to use boiler plate text to explicitly indicate that the software is available for free download and provide a link to it.
You could also say that the purpose of donations is subjective as well. You might talk about appropriate/correct use of donations, but the intended purpose is going to vary from person to person. I'm not endorsing inappropriate use of donations, only pointing out that use may vary in different cases.
My parting point about there seeming to be no change in the source and only providing a different gui means that there is not really a reason to use that version at all. I mentioned kickstarter as an example of a service that gives payment before something is done. No. I don't think it would make a good kickstarter either. I'm sorry if my attempt at being glib didn't come across well.

I wasn't replying to your post (I didn't read it) and I'm not really certain what you're referring to.
I was only making a statement to clarify for other people why this author may be asking for donations and that it is in fact 100% compatible with the GPL to do so. It is also 100% compatible to ask for a fee to download the material (server costs) or for a hard copy (cost of diskettes, etc) so long as it is limited to covering a reasonable cost.
I'm sure anyone who has read the GPL already knows this.
As far as kickstarter as a replacement for donations; this has both its pros and cons. It may be a lot more complex and of no real benefit to the author to do so. Ultimately from anyone else's perspective it is exactly the same. You aren't "owed" anything for either a donation or contribution to a kickstarter account. Those receiving such funds could always "take the money and run".

2Dat is real gone?
There's really some evolution to be done in this synth?
The Dozius fork should be considered the 'official' repository now?

Yup, what I wrote and what you wrote, would make the perfect gui.mcbpete wrote:Agreed - I do find the newer GUI a little cleaner (but yeah I also prefer the LCD screen look of the older one, I also like the 'dots' around the parameter dials)

I don't understand why to change the GUI approach (don't like the new one), and still did not implement the patch management. This last one is, IMO, the most needed feature, and the GUI was good as it was, although some knob placement flexibility would be welcome. The latest GUI releases by layzer and sergio prove the the GUI layout is good, and the bad news is that those cannot be used in this new version, AFAIK.waltercruz wrote:aaah, just found that 2Dat posted a 1.3 version, based on Dozius fork, with soshi studio gui, and removed the donations.

@aciddose - I was referring to your last post where you pointed out that what I was saying was wrong. I was explaining that my answer was a simplification to be easily understood by someone with no experience in legal-ese.
I actually didn't understand that you were supporting his actions based from what you wrote. I am apparently in agreement with you on all the points regarding whether or not he was allowed to do what he's doing by GPL. I'm not in agreement that it was appropriate for him to do so the way he was doing it, but I'll just keep my own opinion regarding that.
As far as kickstarter. I mentioned that as something more suitable for the way that it seemed he was trying to work. It was only half serious. I can see that I need work on exactly how I write things.
My last post was just a response to your correction of my post. Other than his conduct being appropriate which is entirely my personal opinion we don't appear to be in disagreement on any point.
In short, I'm sorry for bothering you and won't belabor this subject with you again.

I didn't point out anything about you and never read your post. How could I reply to it? I have no idea what you're talking about.omac wrote:@aciddose - I was referring to your last post where you pointed out that what I was saying was wrong.
