Satin...when?

In studio & delay mode, almost none, perhaps 5 - 10 samples (compensation not ready yet in the beta, though).Dip200 wrote:How much latency does this plugin have ?
In flange mode, there's 10ms latency, because there are 2 machines actually, and one is at that fixed delay, while the 2nd approaches from either side, having an overall maximum span of 20ms.

Agreed, it's way too big and a logo shouldn't really overlap the interface (even if its not really covering anything up)Urs wrote:Not my final designCh00rD wrote:Not that this is very important at all, imho, but it makes me wonder: why is the larger, 'overlapping' u-he logo (cf. Awesome! Both, the fact that it has low latency and that you guys offer through null flanging! All I am missing is the buy buttonsascha wrote:In studio & delay mode, almost none, perhaps 5 - 10 samples (compensation not ready yet in the beta, though).Dip200 wrote:How much latency does this plugin have ?

I never used and will never use an actual tape machine so my question is how would one employ this in a DAW? Would you put it on the master buss or also on individual tracks? Would you put it as a first or last plugin?
Thanks.
Thanks.

You could put it on a bus (drum tracking), individual tracks (vocals), or even master bus (that would emulate sending out the whole mix to the tape and back). I would usually put these before any ambience effects like delay or reverb, but I don't think you'd lose much if you put it as a last effect in the chain.

I use a tape sim to compress that tiny transient that results from compressing a drum bus. Most people seem to hard/soft clip these at the mastering phase.
This is where I use a decent tape sim, I'm using the one from Voxengo right now. The overdrive compresses the transients in a way that doesn't sound like mush as in using a limiter or setting the compressor attack to 0, but isn't as harsh as hard/soft clipping. It also adds some nice wide-band coloration that seems to go well with drums.
I'm looking forward to giving this one a shot. If it's reasonably priced and sounds significantly better than Voxengo tape bus I might add it to my collection.

In short it's a special kind of compression. It's very transparent in terms of affecting the perceived dynamics of the sound and adds some coloration which can sound nice in certain situations.

The delay time is a function of tape speed & the distance from the rec head to the repro head, hence we have two controls.Dip200 wrote:How much control does the user have over the speed ? Is it possible to sync the delay or change speed in milliseconds ?
Of course, tape speed also affects the overall character, the frequency response, saturation etc.
The 'distance' knobs of the 4 taps we have in the delay mode can be set to 'inches', currently.
At the moment, we have no sync function for the two parts, as we haven't found the 'perfect' work flow yet. Thing is, on Satin, 'speed' isn't just a switch; it can speed up & slow down *continuously*, all the way from 7.5 up to 30ips. The 'distance' can be set from 0 to 5 inches. Using a 'sync' button would make the speed control snap to positions where - apart from just delaying the audio - the resulting frequency response and overall texture might not match anymore with what you'd like to achieve.
But we do keep on thinking about this issue (is it really one?).
