I personally do it with the LOOPER of Ableton instead of the session view. It gives you more creative freedom!
In case some haven't seen

is worth checking out if using Ableton Looper.

Ugly as sin, but fully scriptable controls (MIDI and OSC) was always its selling point.
Augustusloop and Enso are interesting as they really adhere to the tape machine paradigm, where things like Mobius and MSuperLooper are more Lexicon JamMan/Oberheim Echoplex style loopers. What I like most about Augustusloop is that you can play the speed with a MIDI note source.

I have had a difficult time figuring out Augustusloop as a looper, and have found Enso more intuitive and with better features for live looping and sampling/"playing" the loop itself, like RTZ and the sector functions. I found a way to trigger different playback speeds using MIDI CC pads, using ReaLearn in Reaper - it's like the DL4 sampler but even more flexible!

Yeah, Augustusloop is a bit awkward. What it’s really good for is making a loop and then “playing” it with MIDI notes.

Interesting! Will test it out. I think it'd be rare that I'd have a use for that though - since it would shift the key a little too drastically for me. I prefer using half/double speed forward and reverse so that it's just octaves.

I’ve been live looping as my main music paradigm since 1993. I’ve used everything. Right now for *overdubbing* live loopers (i.e. you can do sound on sound) Enso is the cheapest/easiest to use. The one thing that bugs me about it is that it needs the transport to be running to work, but this seems to bother literally no one else. It has the easiest and most flexible midi set up of anything. It’s primary limit is that it will only record up to 5 mins of audio.

Augustus Loop is irritating to use in the stomp box, traditional digital looper paradigm. Clearing the loop takes time (sometimes a LOT of time) and the controls are not easy to set up for midi control. I used it for many years and ended up using Bitwig Grid to do most of the heavy lifting, but I doubt anyone but me has the patience for this. It has a max loop time of ***60 minutes*** which is astounding! I used it for installation work and many other things and it worked flawlessly. Enso is just much easier to integrate. Augustus Loop requires iLok (soft or hard.)

The Melda looper is good. For some folks (that do the layer upon layer loop work, building things up like Juana Molina or Reggie Watts) it is surely the best option. For me it isn’t — I do weird stuff with my loopers where I put them in feedback loops and disable the internal feedback (so that I can put tape emulation in the feedback loop, say)... Melda just doesn’t want to do that properly. So I don’t use it. If you don’t do weird things with feedback it might be the best choice. I couldn’t say.

I would get Enso. Watch the videos for how to use it. Practice the basic features and then see if you’re into the more advanced ones. It is important to learn a looper like you’d learn an instrument. They are capable of much, much more than they may first appear to be.

If one was ok using only the internal Melda fx, would it still be lacking for your use even when using the "Feedback FX" parameter?

You would think so. But it doesn’t work properly. Might be an issue with PDC, might be something else, but it doesn’t work as you would expect it to.

My signal flow for this is to put the looper in the feedback fx slot of a Delay-1 in bitwig. I use the feedback setting on the delay (which I set to 10ms duration) to manage the feedback of the loop. Then I turn dry and feedback down to 0% in the looper. This basically makes the looper into a tap tempo, no-feedback delay. Then I can add processing before or after the delay plugin in the loop that will be applied to each repeat of the loop. I manage wet/dry and feedback, as I said, in the Delay-1 plugin. I think that this may put the plugin in a weird place w/r/t PDC if it is trying to do some PDC work internally. Shrug — enso, Augustus, Mobius and pretty much everything else I do this with works fine. Melda’s looper literally freaks out. Howling noise or no sound at all audible but the meters going crazy... something’s not right. But, like I said, Enso is working as I need it to for now... maybe I’ll try it again in another year or so.

Interesting, thanks for explaining!

I'm selling my Melda Looper at the moment - offers welcome
