Most Linux distributions install tons of useless services running in the background that most users aren't aware of, especially those new to Unix-like operating systems. Every one of those services is a potential security risk. Most users don't know how to go about securing a Unix-like operating system. It is much more complex than locking down a Windows machine for your average, non-computer-science-degree-wielding user. I don't think anyone with even a tenuous grasp on reality would argue this last statement.
Fair enough, and I agree with what you say, but your last reply consisting of one word didn't give much away! You're certainly correct in that many (but by no means all) distributions by default have loads of unnecessary services running by default, it is important to distinguish between the OS and the applications. However, there are Linux distributions that by default don't run these services. Obviously, you have to be savvy enough to know what distribution to get. OTOH setting up a firewall on Windows requires a certain amount of knowhow (what can be safely let through, what any warnings actually mean etc.)

In the context of a desktop machine that isn't running servers, however, I would argue strongly that Linux is more secure as it doesn't provide the sort of environment that facilitates the spread of virus and other malware - no need to faff around with virus checkers and AdAware etc.

Either way, though, whatever the OS, a PC can be a (virtual) dangerous thing in the hands of the inept or ignorant!

That's what I meant by security anyway..

It's interesting that more and more commercial firewalls and security devices are now moving to a linux platform. For example Checkpoint now runs on Splat (SecurePlatform), which is based on a redhat distro, as do the cisco ids sensors, Nokia's IPSO is derived from FreeBSD, but in it's next incarnation will be moving to a new Linux derivative (i forget which distro) etc etc. And obviously many home firewalls are little stripped down linux distros.

What does that mean? Well, it means you can remove the insecure services from Linux if you so choose. But you can't in windows. Does that mean desktop Linux installs are more secure than windows installs? Well, no. But it's an interesting trend. Basically more and more often security devices are linux boxes ...

Don't know much about it, but I had a quick play around with DeMuDi - the debian based multimedia biased distro. Most of it's way over my head, and my soundcard wasn't supported anyway so I'd be stuffed for drivers - but one thing I recall was that it had a real time kernel...that's an immediate advantage over windows n'est-ce pas?

I'm probably like the rest of you guys, if my plugs etc ran on Linux, I'd switch tomorrow if Tracktion was there (I run Ubuntu at home on an old iMac, I actually prefer it to windows). If we're taking steps to get there, surely that's a good thing?

That was a nice one..
well, at least it's still continued as OpenBeOS
ähmmm...

I won't be switching to Linux, but I still think it's cool that JUCE is now Linux-compatible. A visionary would recognize that the only way to make the OS less relevant is to make true cross-platform coding a reality. JUCE is a huge step in that direction.

Sticking 2 fingers up... could also be giving the bollocks!
