News * 25th April 2005 - Released the first Linux Juce version, 1.10!

Post

Wow. Looks like Tracktion really WILL go to Linux in the not too distant future. Cool.

Yeah! And all the OSX and win32 plugs will be ported too! Or maybe they can just run! And the soundcard drivers! They'll work too! And Ableton will rewrite Live in JUCE and I'll be able to use that too!

Now why in the blue f**k would I want to switch to Linux?

What the f**k has the possibility of an application being ported to Linux got to do with causing you to change the actual operating system you use?

My point exactly.

What the heck, KLF? :? First of all, you don't know what the hell you're talking about. And second of all, why would it affect you? It's no different than if any other company said, "We now offer Linux compatibility!" What difference should it make to you?

I just don't see the excitment about tracktion on linux. that's all. I use JUCE at work, and I have to write in-house tools for the Linux server. so it's a good thing. just don't see tracktion on linux being a fantastic idea. yet.

I have used Suse, Mandrake (was a Mandrake Club member for a year or so) and the last 2 Fedora releases. However, there is NOTHING that will make me go back to Linux as a main OS again. It is, in a way, the best OS for people that have a lot of spare time (read: edit config files, download RPMs, hunt for up-to-date mirrors for update managers, recompile modules etc.).

I used to be a big advocate of it (all the University programming stuff was on UNIX clones). In a way I still am. I know people dream of a free OS for the ultimate audio setup, but it ain't Linux, sorry folks. Even that LiveCD with Rosegarden etc. seems a false economy.

Also, with all the wrappers you'd need to get the VSTs compatible (and there seems to be confusion about JACK and VST compatibility), any CPU savings from using Linux (if you believe there are any) would be worse due to the non-native implementations.

On the other hand, perhaps more VST developers would be willing to develop LADSPA plugins, which according to the documentation, can be quite open-ended and efficient.

Without a (good) host, plugins and drivers don't matter. Without drivers and plugins, the host doesn't matter. It's a classic chicken-and-egg problem, and the only way to get any progress is to get something started.

I'd be happy enough for a linux version 'cos my PC spends about half its time in linux mode for work, so that just saves me rebooting to lay down a few beats.

I want a linux DAW so I can use JACK, and so I can relax a bit about security.. and so I can stick 2 fingers up at Bill Gates.

I personally wouldnt switch to anything that didnt have the apps I like, and the plug-ins I use. So that basically means no OSX or Linux for me.

So its Microsoft all the way baby! In the battle between good and evil, somebody has to be evil. :troll:

so what if you don't care about T being ported to linux?

people who use linux would be stoked. anyone could say similar things about mac support. WTF Mac? why the f*ck should i care that T is getting ported to mac?! i don't give a shit! and i, of course, feel it's very necessary to make sure you're all aware of this fact!

As for JUICE being able to run on Linux, thats great news. That means there finally is a good "three axis" gui toolkit, that doesent cost your shirt and then some.

For running Tracktion on Linux, its all about choice. There is for the moment very few good DAW's for Linux. Tracktion will have a tremendous market opportunity.
There is a Linux distro that is optimized for musical usage.
If you buy a mac just to run one program, or a Windows machine, that could be a real sweet thing. A free operative system, that is optimized, that is, if you run Tracktion and Audacity fx.
The con's I se are a few though.

*Drivers, you switch from being in the mercy of the product developers (if they dont write drivers for Linux) to someone doing it at home, thus reducing you from using the latest highend soundcards.

*Is Asio possible yet on Linux?

*The switch (it is always a learning period while switching OS)

*Engaging in the OS battle (for me running Linux/Win32/OS X, I have had a lot of questions on which is "the best" OS, I get away with having the competitor, because I have 'em all)

Is this also a hint of what Jule's new big secret project is about. Will it be tri-platform?

If for no other reason, Linux is good because the better it gets the more competition it creates for MS. And hopefully that will force MS to become better and more secure.

Right now you have primarily one choice if you run x86. Windoze.
