I do. In each little part.
I can use a cab that sounds twangy, has a bottom heavy sound, a midrange sound...can you?
Yes, by micing things up differently. And, others than with a POD (which I quite like, more on that later), it doesn't sound like a wannabe-mic-movement.
can you say state with fact any part of any song that would of sounded better had I used your Boogie, my old Boogie, my old Marshall plexi, my Marshall tube rig?
Probably not.
But that's got other reasons, sorry.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti-tube amp...but I am anti-snob and I'm sick of this bullshit that a tube amp is better...
I'm absolutely anti-snob as well, but I'm sick of people telling you can get a great tone from amp sims, yet I've never heard anything like that coming from them.
And I'm absolutely sorry for saying this, but I have to: I wouldn't want a single tone from the recordings on your site, but I'd gladly take Empty Uranus' tone any day.
Your opinion may vary, but this is mine.

Anyways, a few more things coming to my mind:
- Can you get an authentic (authentic as in "sounding like a Plexi") amp sound from amp sims? Most likely you can't.
- Can you get a great sound from amp sims? Yes. At least for some sounds.
- Can you go all crazy with amp sims? Defenitely yes.

I'm just getting incredibly sick of all those software companies trying to sell me things as Plexis, Rectifiers and whatever. They just don't even sound remotely close.
Why don't they just call their models "clean", "gain" and "higain" amp? That way I would at least not being forced to believe it'd sound like something "famous". Listen to GR2's "Gratifier". It's not even a bad amp, but trying to make people believe it'd resemble a Rectifier is just an utterly sad joke. In case they had it looking different and used another name, I probably wouldn't care at all. But as is, it's just laughable.

Anyways, I'm using amp sims EXACTLY for what they're doing best: Being convenient and allowing for crazy stuff that is. And I'm using real amps EXACTLY for what they're doing best: Offering a great "traditional" guitar tone that is.
Things may change and right now I'm opting for some hybrid setup, but just last week I played a gig with my Mark IV (didn't use it for a while) and I can just tell you that it's been night and day, compared to all sorts of programmable, digital, simulated stuff (which I'm using more often, for the convenience part of it).

 COme on, get a f**king clue.. And how it "has been said If you give a great guitarist a Samick and bandit he can play the shit out of it still" Yeah maybe If he gets a flow and a feeling, or maybe he wouldnt, who the f**k made this FACT?!!
I never said it was a fact. Does every opinion in the world need to be introduced with, "In my opinion...". No, it's obvious by context. In this particular case, it's very very commonly said by many professional guitarists that it's not the gear, it's the player. That's all I'm saying. And yes, I really DO think that any good player will still play well even with mediocre gear. They're not sucky little punk-asses (except maybe Al Di Meola) who are going to cry and throw a tantrum because their tone's not perfect. They're just gonna play.
...BUT shitty sound, a guitar that feels like a lump of wood is not going to be conductive to flowing energy and therefore would be a blockage of flow. YOu would have to be a f**king god(literally) to pick up ANY instrument and play with YOUR vibe.
Well, I'll give you a little bit of this one... gear CAN be inspirational and can push your playing. But I don't think you have to be a literal GOD to be able to make the most out of mediocre gear. And note that I rarely (never?) say "shitty," I always say "mediocre" or "passable." There IS a lower limit to quality at which you just won't be able to play effectively at all.

Greg
Now I know both of you know quite a bit about wood...but I'm puzzled how a guitar made out of masonite (cardboard that knows someone :hihi:) has stood the test of time so long, DanElectro

BTW I don't know how many have heard of it let alone played it the Dan Armstrong Ampeg Lucite guitar

that pick-up is removable and can be replaced with another...because the stones show one on get yer yah yahs out and the local music store sold them when we were kids my half brother had to have one...talk about a guitar with no character...:hihi:

trust me Sascha I have no problems with you not liking my tone...I do and I'm not alone, I have received countless compliments on it and I'm quite happy with it...in fact really the only one who attacks it often is you, so cast your judgements all you want...it doesn't change a thing I like to play, I may not be the most talented in the world, but I do have talent and I get tremendous satisfaction from playing...I hope you can say the same

Thankfully. ;) In fact, I got more of a response than I wanted OR expected! I'll elaborate, though, despite my better judgement: Look, it's nothing personal. I don't even know you, hence my not going out of my way to be particularly respectful. But I really HAVE been in too many similar conversations that I can see certain elements of this one going nowhere. I don't need to respond to your points, and chose not to, because your own first didn't respond to mine. That was my entire reason for giving up. Not because I "disrespect" you (though, in truth, you have earned neither disrespect nor respect so I dunno how that's a factor) but rather because the conversation was destined to go nowhere fast.

There's no WAY I was going to add more paragraphs to it, because then instead of one point that you still haven't grasped, there becomes an endless string of separate (but seemingly related) points, most of which turn out to be nothing but red herrings. Then eventually I'll start catching your inconsistencies and contradictions (there's a glaring one in your last post, for example) until even I find myself annoyingly pedantic. I'd rather not bother.

And just a hint... I've written entire volumes worth of material on poetry and prose. I am capable of selecting an assortment of sonorous and sesquipedalian syntax for the asservation of my syllogisms....

But I still don't use phrases like "displaying the hubris to prophesy my rejoinder" and expect anything better than light-hearted mockery. ;)

Greg
oh gawd...kill me now...hook up my testicles to the plates of some glowing EL34's and hit the standby... i asked if you would elaborate on my logical fallacies but then you only go on to commit some more of your own (ad hominum seems to be your favourite at this point)...you haven't explained the one point i missed, please do this.

then you go on to map out a future dialog, man, the effrontery boggles...and that hint, omg...Argumentum ad verecundiam but you cite yourself as the authority! so much for trying to avoid being annoyingly pedantic.

i blieve that every person derserves an initial moderated dose of respect but i tire of holding up this mirror just to be ignored.

fine, attack my writing, don't address the arrogance it accuses you of...so what did you write about bill bissett? did you dismiss the totality of his work cuz he spells funny?

so lemme guess: you hold some position of authority, a teacher mebbe, and the swelling is interfering with your focus? nothing personal, you understand.

You're tiresome. What I was trying to get out of was this very kind of conversation, which is why I said "against my better judgement." I should've just listened to my better judgement. :D

I feel like the conversation with you, when it comes to the substance of the thread is something like,

LM: You should wear a winter coat. It's cold outside.
You: What does cold have to do with the size of my house?
LM: What? I wasn't even talking about your house.
You: Great, so now you think I have a shitty house.
LM: Wasn't I just talking about how winter wear makes sense when it's cold?

And that's just when we're ON-topic. Now that we're off-topic, it's a real labour even thinking about keeping up.

I guess I was attacking your writing, but understand-- I don't attack people's writing arbitrarily or to prove that I'm better than them. I have a great many friends on this forum who have multiple difficulties with written English. The reason I mocked you (in this ONE case... it's not like I itemized spelling mistakes or grammar mistakes, because I have enough of my own to worry about) is because you opened yourself up for it by overstepping your own facility with the language. Let's admit it, your choice of vocabulary was funny. :D

And now you want to get into a pissing contest about it? OK... your choice of language is beautiful, poetic, and effective. Moreso than mine. You communicate your ideas with more clarity and precision than I do. And while you addressed every single one of my points with grace, I am a rude bastard who just disrespects people and offers nothing of value in the meantime... a troll as it were.

Yay, you win. ;)

Hink: it's one of those funny things. Such guitars aren't legendary because their tone is "great" in the traditional sense of the word, but rather because they somehow struck a unique and funky vibe that is characterful and therefore appeals to people. :D

In some cases, a material that's not theoretically very good turns out to be great-- a LACK of sustain, for example, produces a distinctive tone that's sought-after for certain genres of music.

As it turns out, though, the density of that lexan (or whatever that plastic crap is!) is such that it makes for a fairly stable guitar. Difficult to repair the thread holes when they get worn out, though, unlike wood.

The short answer: sometimes it's not about what "should" sound good, but what sounds right for the job. ;)

actually I believe it was Lucite...I remember drooling over that guitar as a kid and later when I could play I was so disapointed

Him: John I got a Dan Armstrong lucite
Me: COOOOOL, I'm coming up>>>>>>>driving>>>>>>driving>>>...45 minutes later
Him: Isn't it great (as he presents it to me)
Me: Wow just like I remembered, plug it in
Him: click, buzz, buzz, buzz here yah go
Me I strum a chord...uhhh, what's wrong with it?
Him: what do you mean?
Me: I don't remember it sounding like this
Him: I know
Me: Let's try the other pick-up
Him: replaces pick-up
Me: Nope, that's not it...maybe you could turn it into a clock
Him: Actually I found a guy in Vermont who collects these, he's gonna send me some info on changes I can make to get a better sound.

a month or so goes by and him and me are talking (note my awesome grammar)
Me: How's that ampeg guitar doing?
Him: I sold it to the guy in Vermont

:hihi: [/i]

i did make other points that didn't just disappear into the ether, you chose to ignore them. pick and choose.

and you seem to tire easily sometimes and at other times you're like the energizer bunny.

Yes... I intentionally ignore a lot of it because it's exhausting.

I don't tire easily, I tire of people like YOU easily. That's different. ;)

Me: Are you happy with your thang.
Myself: yup.
Me: would you trade it for another thang?
Myself: Nope.

To track a real amp good you need a lot more than a good amp to make it sound half decent.
With amp sims, hardware or software, I just have to plug and play... as long as i got my chops rigth it will sound rigth.
