Thread reminds me... I still have a loaded Mac Pro 5.1 upstairs I need to sell
Untill Apple release a Studio Mac with a single version OS that is updated for 5-10 years rather than releasing a new OS (seems like every year) im not going back to Mac.
except when they are, of course.
Yep.koalaboy wrote: Sat Sep 21, 2024 6:28 pm I have a Mac Studio, but it's not any faster for audio production and I can easily add more disks to the PCs, in the case direct via SATA.
They're all good enough but the customisation of PCs still wins.
If I *had* to use a laptop, I'd likely go for a mac, but in a home studio, PC desktop wins IMHO.
The M2 Ultra 24 Core is more comparable to the Ryzen 9 7900. Both desktop CPUs (the M2 Max counts as a laptop CPU). The M2 Ultra 24 Core is even slightly better than the Ryzen in terms of performance (multithreading, the differences in single threading are rather small). However, the prices at Apple are of course hefty... A Mac Studio with M2 Ultra will certainly cost more than twice as much (I estimate $4000-5000).whyterabbyt wrote: Sat Sep 21, 2024 6:16 pmexcept when they are, of course.
faster than the M2 Max in the Mac Studio, or the M3 Pro, for £400 less, and completely fanless...

| LinksI’m just on a MacBook Pro now. I use a USB-C hub with power in and HDMI out when I want to use it like a desktop. It’s pretty cool. I plug in a single USB-C from the hub and I instantly have my 4k monitor, keyboard + mouse, MIDI controller, audio device + monitors, and AC power.koalaboy wrote: Sat Sep 21, 2024 6:28 pm Both my PCs are almost silent - you can't hear them from a couple of feet away and definitely not on any recording.

Well, the customisation options on PCs are a double-edged sword. Since I've been using a Mac, I've changed my mind a little.koalaboy wrote: Sat Sep 21, 2024 6:28 pm They're all good enough but the customisation of PCs still wins.

| LinksI have plenty of storage. In addition to the MacBook’s SSD (which ships with up to 8TB) I also have a 1TB Transcend JetDrive SSD card installed as a separate physical drive, a 2TB external USB-C SSD backup drive, and a USB-C hard drive bay with 3.5/2.5 SATA slots and about a dozen HDs and SSDs I’ve harvested from desktops over the years.
true. They are also awesome if you are professional on a budget that knows clients depend on you and you only update when you HAVE to. And you hardly ever HAVE to.zerocrossing wrote: Fri Sep 20, 2024 3:48 am Macs are awesome of you have a lot of extra money and don’t mind losing a bunch of software when an OS update breaks everything.
I built my own PCs for a couple decades. I never once was able to reuse parts.4damind wrote: Sat Sep 21, 2024 9:17 pm Well, the customisation options on PCs are a double-edged sword.
