The flexibility of FL5 pricing structure makes it a tempting recommendation which I am now seriously considering as an alternative. (I downloaded the demo, not being an FL user, and so far I'm very impressed indeed...)
Often overlooked is the fact that Tracktion doesn't restrict you to one platform - projects started on Mac can be finished on PC, and vice-versa. I run both PCs and Macs, and these days I won't buy any audio software that isn't dual platform.

If any of your students own a Mac instead of PC, then FL doesn't seem such a good choice... (this is not a pro PC or pro Mac statement, as I said, I use both)

cheers

That's a good point. I don't know of any students that have macs though. By the same token, Garageband 2 looks awesome - but they wouldn't have that at home. I think the vast majority of households here in the UK have Windows PCs. I agree that being dual platform is one of Tracktion's strengths, of course.

This is exactly why I chose Tracktion.

in my opinion the longer they take to make users happy, the lower the price will have to be before some of us upgrade. i think mackie is mismanaging this upgrade and alienating users pretty effectively.

I think Mackie is doing what they have to do to put a very powerful new sequencer release in the market. Why would the price be *lower* if they do a solid beta-test to make sure the new release is solid and reliable? IMO the price should be lower if they released it last month, because that would imply new users doing part of the beta testing ;) :D

the demo was a sneaky public beta

...but I'm perfectly fine with that, you guys have done a good job at finding bugs :D

Damn!! I didn't know that! I thought the demo was there so that prospective buyers could assess whether they want to part with their money for T2

Does that mean all the bugs are going to be fixed at last? :-o

Going back to the "with or without plugins" issue check this http://trio.harmony-central.com/ramgen/ ... ktion-2.rm video from the groundhog days. Pay attention at ~6:00

Yeah, I'm not sure there is anything to indicate bug fixes are in the works from demo user feedback. I don't think you can really consider it a public beta. It would be disingenuous for them to do that intentionally anyway.

am i the only one that thinks mackie is spoiling the good efforts of the raw material crew?

it seems to me that beno and the rm crew were great at building a community of like minded folks and keeping them energized.

mackie seems to be squandering that kind of buzz and treating users like cogs in a wheel to digital audio domination.

Post

No sean, you're not the only one who thinks/feels that way. Look at some older threads and you'll spot quite a lot of names from the past - people who have basically moved on.

With this release I certainly know of a few well known users in these parts who probably won't be upgrading (and I won't be). Very sad :(

I will be continuing, but I would like to see the energy going into the product itself rather than a bunch of (mostly) freeware plugs. I already have Ticky Clav and Cheese Machine (both are great) - now via Mackies licensing I will have to pay for them. Finally they are pitching poor T as a "semi-pro" app - once tarred with that brush it may be hard ever to shake that (wrong imo) impression. I'm sorry to gripe (sort of!) but Mackie may as well hear and maybe even respond if they can.

Beno IS from Mackie, you realize, Sean?
