I'm considering purchasing the spike package at my local music store. I've noticed that the package includes the older version, tracktion 1. Should my local store replace their older packages, or is the procedure that I upgrade it to tracktion 2 after I purchase it. Do I have to pay for the upgrade? What about the documentation, would that be out of date as well?

Is the situation that the Spike package always includes tracktion 1, and that tracktion 2 is only available through upgrade?

That's one of the questions not many of us are certain of the answer to, unless I've missed some recent threads. I believe that the way it was working is that your store isn't at all accountable, and that you could do an online upgrade. That would mean not getting all the extra plug-ins like Sampletank2SE or AmplitubeLE. Also, I'm not sure if it was costing or not. If it WAS costing, I believe you should still be eligible for the $20 upgrade price.

Actually, I know nothing. Maybe we should wait until Mackie dudes respond. ;)

Yeah I don't even know the intricacies of the upgrade process. I would email techmail@mackie.com and they should be able to tell you.

Hemant, I bought Spike in Germany but I assume it's the same process everywhere. You first register the hardware then type in an authorisation code for the software, which SHOULD provide you with a key to unlock the Tracktion 2 demo. That you'll probably have to download. Mackie seem to have finally updated their spike page..

By the way, my authorisation code was actually refused but Mackie support fixed me up with a key the next day.

Thanks, good info. I probably should have known that. :)

It would be a shame if the download did not include the extra plugins...hope to find out more about this.

It only includes the plug-ins listed in the link above.

I just got the new Sweetwater cat. in the mail(Vol 65) and noticed that the Spike now comes with T2 so you might consider buying it online at Sweetwater.com ($149.00) instead of at the local store. I've had very good luck with them.

The Spike for $149.00? Is that $US? I'm seeing $249 here (http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Spike/). I'd be interested at $149! :)

Firstly, T2 upgrade is about $20 or somit. Secondly, don't buy the spike (if its usb 1), buy something with firewire/USB2; believe me you're saving yourself some real hassle; usb1 gives you awful latency. (I had a tascam us-122 and moved to a presonus firepod, but there are cheaper things).

Post

:? OK, we all know that USB2 is better than USB1.1, but that's generally for multi-in, multi-out devices with several stereo pairs. For 2 ins and 2 outs, I don't think 1.1 is as much of a problem as some people believe (particularly if, like me, you're actually only using 1 input at a time 99% of the time you're recording). I've used the same unit you mentioned (US-122) fairly extensively and the audio was stable and hassle-free at 6ms latency.

If 6ms latency is 'awful' then I guess you're right. To me, 6ms is perfectly usable. :D

My understanding is that it has nothing to do with latency. USB 1 will only allow simultaneous recording and playback of two channels at 24/41, not 24/96. For 24/96 you must either disable input or output (depends on what you want to do, playback or record), or use one in and one out (no stereo).
If you can't beat your computer at chess, try kick-boxing.

Ah, that makes sense. I hadn't really thought about it because the US-122 is limited to either 44.1 or 48, so that issue never came up. It would certainly warrant another peek and more research if you're planning to record 96. (which I don't, but others may)

I noticed the spike at sweetwater for 249US as well. I emailed them to check whether that version was T2. Haven't heard back yet. I also emailed mackie for the whole upgrade issue, as well as regarding plugins received in the upgrade vs purchasing the independant t2 package.

I'm residing in canada...I'll be curious how much more I'll pay from sweetwater what with conversion, shipping and taxes. I'm paying 540CDN for it a the local canadian stores, and thats with the T1 software!
