Hi - I'm slowly learning Tracktion...

I imported a midi file, put synthfont w a GM bank of sound fonts into the master filter section, but there was no response when I adjusted the level control on individual tracks. Any ideas? Thank you!

Hey, hope you're enjoying T. :)

Okay, there's a few things that you might be unfamiliar with. Firstly, the master filter section is, if you like, the hub of all the tracks. All the tracks are amalgamated into one signal and this is processed in the master filters section, so it's this area in which you'll usually do your final mix EQ, compression, mastering etc.

The reason that altering the different tracks isn't affecting the volume is that you're altering the audio volume before its hit the Synthfont VST in the master section. Literally, a raw audio signal of 0 is going into that section. MIDI data needs to go into the VST, and then the audio data can be adjusted.

What you need to do is stick Synthfont onto a lone track (Track 1 for argument's sake). Stick it at the front of all the filters for that track to be on the safe side.

Now, Right-Click on that Synthfont VST and select "Wrap in Rack" or something similar. Now, hold down your Control key (squiggly thing on Mac) and drag that Synthfont rack to every track that needs Synthfont. It's not copying the VST, but making a reference to it on every track.

Now you should be able to adjust the volume for each track. Take the Synthfont out of the Master Filter section if it's still there.

I'll explain later in more detail why this is the case. :)

[EDIT - I've just realised that unless Synthfont handles multiple outputs, adjusting the volume on one track will adjust it for all of them.

2 things to suggest.

1 - Use GM-Midi CC channel 7 to adjust the volume on a MIDI level for each track.

2 - Look into the Tracktion documentation for multiple-output plugins.

Click on a vol/pan filter and look in the lower panel.
There is a check box labeled "apply to midi" or something like that. Check it.

You could also put a soundfont player on each track loaded with your GM bank.

Thanks for the replies. Putting the filter on ea track sounds good unless it demands too much cpu?
