Adding bars to the start of an edit

Hi Guys,

I was working on a project the other day and got myself into a situation that I didn't know the best way out.

The project had a mixture of midi programmed parts and recorded audio with a number of tempo changes and some clip automation.

My client then decided she wanted to drop an eight bar section into the begining of the track. I couldn't figure out a simple way to add some bars at the start as dragging the clips along clashed with the tempo changes. I wasn't sure how the clip automation would be effected, I didn't check that.

I ended up rendering the parts to audio and moving those clips along. Thankfully no futher editing was required on the midi parts otherwise I don't know what would have happened then

Have I missed some basic feature here or if not how would you go about working through this type of situation?

There is an insert command in the lower panel that might work. I haven't tried it.

Automation isn't tied to the clips, unfortunately, so if you've done automation you'll need to use PT's method. I've used it and it works fine.

For future edits, if you haven't automated yet, you can always just grab all clips and move them forward by 8 bars. Grab one of the clips that's snapped to the beginning of a bar and the rest of the clips will stay relative to that clip as it's snapped to a new measure.

OK, I've figured out how to 'insert space into the marked region' You've got to have all the tracks selected for it to work on the whole edit. And this method does move the automation along as well. However, the tempo changes still stay in the same place

You've hit on the one thing that makes me so frustrated I want to toss this program, along with my computer, and sometimes even myself, off a tall building. As long as you stay in 1 tempo or time signature, everything works great. As soon as you start changing them... well, either you'd better get it right the first time or you're gonna have a lot of work ahead of you. It becomes a huge sloppy mess if you try to change the arrangement at all. I've tried everything to make it easier, and wound up exporting all the midi files in brief clips, re-arranging them in a new edit, and re-recording all the audio from scratch. Hell, most of the time, in an edit with lots of timing changes like that, I'll go to copy the marked section and wind up with a completely different part of the song in my clipboard.

Of course, I could be missing something, or doing something very very wrong, but I'll be damned if I can figure out what it is.

I always wondered if there was a way to implement "tempo clips" that could be copied/moved/etc with the audio and midi clips.

Nope, it's a bug. As far as I know, one of the top ones being addressed for future releases, though I'm not a Mackie person so I don't really know for sure.

Yeah, the fact that tempo and automation don't move is really bad.

Also, if you decide to change the entire song's tempo (even if there are no tempo changes in the song) all of the automation will have to be redone.
