Make impulse file from hardware device - how ?

From what i understand most impulses are based on the effect a space has on a known sound, usually these are generated by a sound with a fast attack transient, such as a gunshot
So ... get a gun and fire it at your outboard gear. After that, you're on your own *

I think your answer would be better answered at the forums at www.noisevault.com These folks keep a database of user-contributed impulse response functions, and have lots of useful links to software for making your own impulse responses.

You need two things : a sweep sinus wave file, that you can find on the Waves LTD. website, and a deconvolver soft like the Voxengo one.
Then, you put the sweep sinus on the input, and you process the output with the deconvolver to get the impulse file. But be careful, you can't simulate your won't be able to simulate your gear with impulses if it's a non-linear based effect, like distorsion, compressors...
