Please with the next update use version numbers in the file name, that would be so much easier.

It's not - but I still think it's a good idea.

If you download an update and forget to create a new directory, then you might end up overwriting the existing version. If the update falls over for some reason, you then can't re-install the original.

This is just a solution for the disorganized and offloads responsibility for same to the developer.

No other software installs multiple versions of the same software. Since it's easy enough to just rename your old file "Tracktion_previous.bak" or create a separate folder for the new one, you're asking for a feature that's better left user-controlled.

Wouldn't it be great if mackie called the file x.y so everyone can decided for themselves what to call it!

I agree with Slacknote. I don't want to create new folders every time I download a file, and I don't always save files to the same place. As a matter of fact, I have two 'TracktionPC_allexamples.exe' files on my backup drive now, and one's not the latest.

This was my point exactly. This is not me being disorganised or lazy - as has been suggested. There's nothing wrong with my file management system, with the number of files I can have for any one project I could get into a whole heap of trouble if there was. Many of my files have exactly the same size and creation date, I'd be a fool not to differentiate them in some way. However, I do have the sense to name files which are superficially the same with different names / numbers / what have you, so that I know exactly what is what.

If anyone could be considered as being disorganised or lazy, its Mackie. That said, I can't believe, for one moment, they keep all their versions with the same filename. So, why would they expect us to?

Most software houses rename their patches to something relevant to the release number - it's it really too much to ask that Mackie did the same?

yes far too much! Isn't it obvious that while it may be a trivial matter for you to rename the files yourself, you can't bloody well expect a team of software developers to do it for you! The nerve of some people...

Yes, you're dead right, it did. However consider this scenario;

In common with a lot of other computer users, I use a download manager. When I click on a filename, it automatically opens the file for downloading and sets the download path (as originally determined by me). Now, at that point, I do have the option to change the filename, but if I forget to do that and just hit the 'go' button without thinking, then it will download the file and - if it's the same name as the previous version - it will overwrite the latter.

This is a real storm in a teacup - it's obvious that there are users here who would like the different versions to carry different filenames and it's no big deal for Mackie to do this. I'd rather see this implemented than, say, CD writing (as requested elsewhere) and it would be a lot easier for Mackie to do
