I was thinking of getting a 12" iBook, and would primarily be interested in G4 performance.

That's right in the realm of where I'd be at, seeing as how the 12" iBook is at 1.33Ghz right now.

Let me upload the file when I get home, and I will let you know. Basically, all you do is open up the archive. It will be one track of an acoustic guitar clip, ~ a minute. It has 5 effects applied, all Tracktion supplied. You copy and paste the track over and over and play it back (gets a bit noisy) until your cpu goes red.

People in the other thread were saying how many tracks playing back while staying in the blue, how many tracks while in the red but still clean, and then how many tracks before you get the "!" on the cpu meter.

Okay..its a standard 4200 drive but is my only audio computer so its pretty lean.
Oh yeah i've got 768mb ram installed so not quite standard.

That's fine dude, because I am pretty much getting the same thing. I won't be swapping the HD at all, so measurements with the stock drive is totally cool.

I got 8 tracks playing in the red but it totally tanks with 9.
It must be the reverbs..if you stick stuff on an Aux bus that should help.
I'll try it and see.

I got 12 tracks with the reverbs on AUX bus.
Not great but the hardrive is sloooow.

Yeah totally dude! THat's about what I expected, and the difference between the iBook and my Athlon 2500+ being at like 12 tracks as normal would be because my Athlon's a desktop with separate 7200rpm drives for OS and audio. So that's pretty damn good for the iBook, being at 4200rpm. I bet an external FW drive would really kick ass with it.

Sure man it was interesting and at first I thought the ibook was a bit weak but having read through some post on th other thread its not too shabby..!

I've been running a Lacie FW drive recently and its a breeze.
It's on ebay now.Mainly because I'm changing the internal drive soon to a 7200..I need to be totally mobile and in the box.
I can generally run 16 plus tracks with softsynths and no freezing AND reason rewired with lots of samplers racked up.
I recommend the ibook for the price.
solid and stable.

I can run 9 tracks on an PowerBook G4 867 MHz 768 mb sram osx 10.3.9 rme multiface.
No audio drop outs. Extreme slow GUI.
10 tracks don't work!
The same with the internal sound-chip.
The same results with external and internal hard-drive.

Ok, back to my point, when doing this test, should playback work after adding the tracks, or should we just add the tracks till it goes red when it is not in play, know what I mean?Cause this can affect the outcome of the test tremendously...

I suggest you make a tracktion archive with Subminimal Trackpad, where you state the rules for the test and all that needs to be done with Tracktion for making the test as accurate as possible. Put this tracktion archive in a zip with the Trackpad dll included so that everyone can use it without having to search the web first.

It's gotta play back, otherwise it doesn't give a true indication of the computer's ability.

I can do that with the Trackpad thing, but it'll have to wait til later tonight; I am running late and got to get ready for work

Trackpad don't work ok in osx.

Also, if you get a iBook, you wont get a line in on the soundcard. I made that mistake, gonna go get a toneport, if they get good reviews!

I find it odd that the external FW drive doesn't help the issue. That's weirdness.
