Mini-Tut: Using the Tascam 224/428 (or similar) with T2

Parts of this have been explained in different places all over the forum, so I thought I'd just collect all the info here. This method is also easier and quicker than using Haydxn's Midi Ox method (although I wouldn't have found this out without it, so thanks Haydxn).

When you're done with this, you will be able to use most of the controller's functions, including the jog wheel. Only thing not possible (afaik, please correct me if there is a way to do this) is muting and soloing individual tracks. Everything else works. Here's how, it's really quite simple.

Download Midi Yoke
Download Bome's Midi Translator
Install both. You will have to reboot.

In Bome's:

Set Midi In to: US 224 Control (or wherever your controller's signal is coming from).

Set Midi Out to Midi Yoke NT: 1.

In the options menu, enable Midi Thru and Active Sensing.

Add a translator. Name it Jog right. Double click it. Tick Capture Midi, and turn the jog wheel to the right. We will let this send a midi message: copy and paste
F0 7F 00 06 04 F7
into the midi message box.

Do the same for Jog left, but with this midi message:
F0 7F 00 06 05 F7

Configure all of the other buttons by assigning keystrokes instead of midi messages, i.e.:

the play button triggers "space"
the REW button triggers "-" (jump to prev marker)
the F FFW button triggers "=" (jump to next marker)
the Set button triggers "H" (my key for cutting)

and so on. Note that you shouldn't hold a button down while letting Bome's capture it. Just press it once.

Add all of the functions you need and save the profile. Mapping setting in and out markers plus loop and punch toggle is also a good idea.

This is all quite cool, but you won't be able to use any unassigned buttons or faders in T2 now. But we can fix that.

Leave Bome's running and start T2.

In T2.

In the settings menu (F2), enable all of the midi INs and OUTs of your controller, plus the in and out of Midi Yoke 1.

In the main window, select timecode > respond to midi machine control from device
and set this to Midi Yoke 1.

And now you can map the remaining faders and buttons to whatever you like in T2 (CTRL + Shift + m).
