Yes! I agree...but you can also press the mute/solo
buttons in the property panel.
I don't think it should be nessacary to select a track first though. If no tracks are selected I suggest that all tracks that contains selected clips gets muted/soloed. A simple change that would reduce a lot of mouse moving!
A Shortcut to mute clips would also be very useful btw...
