It's not T2 so much as your mobo/BIOS and OS that you need to worry about, I believe.

Not sure what you mean...if you trying to find out if Tracktion will work on a system with 4GB of ram, based on my experience it will. Wether or not it will access that amount I have no idea. My guess is as Windows applications (I think) have a 2GB memory access limit, Tracktion will probably not access more than 2GB anyway.

Maybe Lunch can help out on this but I seem to remember Jules talking about getting Tracktion to access more then 2GB of Ram a very long time ago. It's buried somewhere in this forum I think.

The USERVA parameter needs to be tweaked to smaller and smaller values until your system is stable. On my machine USERVA=2960.

It is still not clear for me.
It looks like you use 3 GIG
Will it work with 4 GIG?
Will Windows/Tracktion allow T2 to use let's say 3 GIG.
For example if I want to load BFD all into RAM , can I do it? Even with a large kit that will take up 3 GIG?

As i understand it, there's a 4 gig memory addressing limit on 32 bit windows pcs, but not all of that is available to applications on XP. On XP the default is that 2 gig is available for application use. The other 2 gig will be used for kernel operations.

So, in short, no, I don't believe you can load the whole 3 gig into memory. I'd guess that fxpansion can give you a 100% yes or no though.

That's why USERVA was implemented. the switch to turn it on is "3GB". The USERVA value, implemented after M$ realized that the 3GB switch, alone, was causing system crashes on some machines, allows some memory to be reserved for the kernel. In practice, on my machine, Adobe Photoshop uses a max of about 1.7Gb of memory for large files. With the 3GB/userva=2950 switch turned on, Photosop uses 2.3 Gb of memory.While I know this works with Photoshop, I've no idea if it will work for T2.

If you have 4gb of ram is it possible to use a "ramdrive"?

eg: 2gb for windows and a 2gb ramdrive for samples etc. A 2gb ramdrive should show as a separate drive leaving 2gb of available memory. It should also be a lot faster and may improve performance. The downside is... it is in volatile memory.

Tracktion was modified to honour the >2GB addressing some time back. How useful this will be for most users is, as cuervo states, something of a pot-luck.

However, the OPs question does not really address his real issue of whether BFD can load a 3GB kit, which is a question for fxPansion.

I dunno if anyone has written a ramdrive for winxp TBH> I'm not really sure how much practical use one would be in terms of improving performance though, as being able to address that RAM normally would usually be equally benefical in high RAM usage situations.

An alternative might be one of those DIMM drives that are starting to hit the market. Asus I believe makes one, and at least one other company has a similar product. Windows sees it as a hard-drive, but it is populated with DIMMs and as such has wicked quick seek times.
