Hi all,

The counterpoint to Tom LowPass, Tom HiPass is a simple resonant hi pass filter. It's efficient and it sounds good. Written in C++. Enjoy:

are the knobs made of chocolate or marble? haven't tried the filters yet,but i tried your img2wav program from your site.it made a distorted noise,is that cos i've only got onboard sound that only operates at 16bit,as i noticed your prog gives you 24bit wavs?i'll have to check that.

Thanks, spacedad. Notch and bandpass filters will be in the works soon, too, so keep an eye out for them...after that I'm planning a tabla instrument and a granulator...

That's possible, although it should probably sound somewhat distorted, as what's being produced by converting an image into a .wav is basically just a sort of broad-spectrum noise. You might try converting the files from 24 bit into 16 bit though. If you'd like to hear what it's supposed to sound like, take a listen to the piece, Wasteland, at http://www.aetmos.com/ (also on iTunes :wink:). You should be able to hear some of the noises that I was able to get out of img2wav, although they've been processed a bit.

(i'll try img2wav again soon,but i do have coagula and bitmaps+waves etc,and i was assuming it would sound similar?but i'll give it a better go to see if it's silly-old me. )thanks for sharing anyway. :)

Nope, not the same as Coagula at all. Coagula uses color and pixel placement to generate an audio representation of a picture. My img2wav system translates each pixel, starting from the beginning of the image file, into a 24-bit sample. String a whole bunch of samples together, and you have an audio file (i.e. 44,100 pixels will equal 1 second of sound). In theory, it's possible to take an audio file generated by img2wav, and convert it back into the image you started with. Each image will produce a different sound, but while it technically is possible to get something harmonic, it's very unlikely. Like I said, you'll probably get broad-spectrum noise. Although, I guess if you found the right image, you just might come up with Beethoven's 5th...

well,i tried a a simple black n white jpeg with just a few dashes at the bottom and i just get a nasty splutter,i translated it back into a jpeg but it looked very different,kinda yellow with black n white checkers at the top.could you put up an image you know makes a cool sound?or that reverses quite well?maybe my computer is missing some system file or something? :shrug:

Heh, that's funny. I forgot I put the wav->jpg thing in there. I had intended to leave it out because it never quite worked properly. One of the problems is that it doesn't know the dimensions of the original image, so it's just working with some number I hard-coded in. The only information it can get from the .wav file is the number of pixels needed, but it doesn't know if those are all in a row, or what. Anyway, there are some other problems with going back and forth too. The best I ever got was an image of Domokun that I converted into a .wav, and then back into a .jpg, and it still looked mostly the same, although a tad distorted. Mostly img2wav is just a way to make crazy sounds.

putting in arbitrary 'rules' could make for an amusing experience, kinda like an real odd spectrum analyzer (oo... ooo...a spectrum file that 'record/plays' the original sound file.... looks like a whole new file format, however )

there's a gap then a small distorted splutter.
maybe i'll do some more tests with more jpegs,i could send you the results if you like.
