Hi,

I just have my new DAW (AMD X2 4600+ dual core and 4GB RAM) and I'm trying to see how far I can go with VSTi.
Until now I am able to run about 13 VSTi's (a few Halion players, Kontakt samplers, and some other kompakt/kontakt based players). My CPU goes up to approx 60% so that's fine but the strange things seems to be the RAM. I have 4GB installed (I can use max 3.6GB because the mobo doesn't recognize the full 4GB).
Well, when I load all those samples/VSTi in Tracktion I can go to +/- 2GB (I monitor with Windows Taskmanager) and by then Tracktion just freezes and I have to restart it. It just freezes completely. Sometimes the screen becomes black everywhere I move my cursor....just like there's no memory enough (although taskmanager says there's still around 1.6Gb available, even without using the paging file)

I tried for example to open another Kontakt2 sampler and I got the message there's not enough memory. i tried to open other Vsti and I get strange errors-messages (what I've never seen or had before)

I tried several VSTi to see if the problem was related to a perticular VSTi but without succes....Always around 2GB RAM usage Tracktion just freezes (Ofcourse I use the latest version of Tracktion 2)

Anybody suggestions, experience with this?? Any help would we appreciated. Thanks!!

ive gotten issues with sfz+ with no or not enough mem too- not sure id like to figure it out as well

Kontakt will start giving you out of memory messages if you have over 2 GB of RAM installed; that's all the present version's core will address. On many systems, it'll start freaking out at that point. I don't know if the next update fixes the issue or not...

I didn't know those problems with Kontakt so thanks for that, but like I said it's also related to other plugins. It seems that when I reach the 2GB RAM usage Traction freezes, don't matter about which VSTi...so to me it seems to be Tracktion-related. I'm I right here?

It's possible that you have a bad DIMM. Have you used other applications that max out your RAM usage like this? Photoshop might be one to test with.

Unfortenatley I don't have photoshop, but I'll give it a try with other programs. I still doubt it it's a bad DIMM because I run Memtest without any problems so it can't be related to that. Thanks anyway for the advice.

ΟΤ, I know, but are you saying that Kontakt 2 will go crazy if you install more than 2GB ram? I was planning to add some ram, but if this is the case... I now have 1,5GB installed. A week ago I had a similar message (something like dfd not functioning, not enough memory, and audio engine is disabled), but other things were wrong, too (like when opening Live I got a message that Kontakt and a couple of other NI plugins -not all of them- were unregistered, and I had 30 days to register), but I restarted the pc and everything seems ok.

So, should I hold off adding ram? And are there other plugins that have such limitations?

WinXp has a 2GB RAM limitation built into the os due to its 32bit interger restrictions. A 32bit CPU which is what it was built for can address a maximum of 4gig of ram. So when Microsloth built Windows it never thought at the time that people would one day use more than that. ( gee just like they said that when the 8088 and 8086's came out and no one would ver use more than 640k!!!..) but I digress...

The simple solution is to use a memory swicth in the boot.ini file which will allow Windows to use up to 3GB for applications and 1 GB for the OS. You can find the specs here http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/pl ... AEmem.mspx

Be forewarned though that not all apps behave properly nor does XP when this switch is put in there. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Hope is helps. BTW this is one of the areas the WinXpx64 is to address and supposedly Vista but we will have to see on the latter....

Thanks bigwayne, I'll give it a try (and pray I won't destroy my system

) Anyway, if I got you right the standard (an also max.) for each application is 2GB, and by making this change in the boot.ini file it can be 3GB. This can also explain my test : I opened all my samplers, VSTi, video applications,...just about everything what uses RAM while monitoring the taskmanager and I was able to use about 3.68GB RAM, but opening just Tracktion and using many VSTi it frooze at 2GB, so this could be (hopefully) changed by changing the boot.ini file.

We'll see what happens...

BTW, I suppose this applies also to XP home?
