recording controller mapping

I use the MIDI controller mapping feature to map - say - my MIDI expression pedal to a VSTi's wet level. When I move the expression pedal in e-to-e mode I can hear the VSTi's level change, and see the wet level slider change. Moreover, Tracktion 2 successfully records the changing controller values to the midi track. However when I play back, the recorded controller values have no effect.

I'm sure I'm being stupid - how do I get the recorded values to affect the parameter I had mapped them to?

Also is there any way to smooth the recorded values to avoid zippering?
