How to establish latency without a keyboard ?

Hi,

I'm contemplating using my laptop to play a VST instrument live (gigs), but before I buy a USB to MIDI interface, I want to know if the laptops built-in sound is capable of giving me low enough latency. How can I tell without having a midi keyboard attached ?

I don't want to buy a USB soundcard etc, as this is just an experiment.

Any ideas ?

Cheers.

Use Tracktion Keys to play MIDI notes from your laptop keyboard.

Or insert a blank MIDI clip into a track, route it to a synth, and play the little keyboard on the side.

Or you could install ASIO4All to give your laptop's soundcard an ASIO driver. Lower the latency and play an audio clip in Traction. If you can reduce the latency to about 10 or 12 ms before you hear glitching, you should be OK. 6 ms would be even better, especially if you plan on recording singing.

Play an audio file on the sequencer. Connect the analog output of your laptop to the analog input and record it.
Then see in your sequencer how much later the recorded version is compared to the original.
