I need Music tips and tricks for kick drums
like maybe doubling the 2 kick tracks with a certain Vst plugin
just give me some tips or tricks.

Post

This may seem like a useless relpy. A while ago Computer Music posted a trick the Neptunes use on the kick drum. I think it involved slight reverb and a weird compression setting. It was subtle, but it kind of gave the kick a sucking sound.

Maybe someone else will remember how it was done. I may have a track where I used it somewhere. I will post the settings if I do. I also like placing a really deep, unaltered sine wave behind the kick, giving it a bigger presence.

Most of my kicks are subtly distorted now, with camelphatfree and tls saturated driver. The Tls is good for distorting percussion with its envelope settings. Even when I dont distort the kick i will compress with camelphatfree.

Also after distortion, the attack of the kick is typically pounded flat, so I will usually put a compressor after the distortion.

I just saw a CM list of tricks that included several on kick drums. The one I remember is:

Try layering one or more additional kicks on top of the one you're using, possibly even using a low sine wave sound instead of a kick sample. Then, run them all through a gate so that all the kicks start at exactly the same time. Follow the gate with and compression or other FX you need.

Another one in the article was to simply use a gate triggered to begin a little ways into the kick, or layer of kicks, so that you get a punchier start to the kick.

One interesting trick I read of recently is to have a short reverb on the bass drum and a compressor after the reverb. That compresses the reverb as well giving the sound slightly more sustain and body.

Truly mind-boggling music! - New album out! - And a blog!

:!: Don't forget to check that the cat isn't a sleep in the bassdrum before playing. :!:

My two cents, continuing this... (and other stuff already mentioned)

It's uncanny what a convolution plugin and proper extremely short impulses do the drums. There might be a reverb plugin or two that can deliver these really tight, subtle early reflection -style reverbs, but I go for the convolution stuff every time.

Other than that, it's layering, layering, layering. I don't usually go for the "everything needs a compressor" approach, as using three layers seems to deliver what I'm looking for.

One for the attack portion.

One for the body of the sound (this is most often a decent kick by itself, the snappy attack getting cut either by changing the sample start point or just by filter / eq, and usually a tad of highpass filter / eq to clear the low end for the third component)

One for the low end - sub bass if one prefers the term.

This way it's easier to make sure that the low end thump is there right from the beginning of the sample, instead of madly compressing and eqing that kick one started with - and which lacked the low end impact... that usually creeps in after a short while when it comes to the typical kicks from the usual drum machines.

Works wonders. I just wish my stuff progressed once I've nailed down the kick :P

Somewhere amongst the kazillion to-do projects there's a drumsynth plan for this... and a collaborator for the project. If only the other kazillion-1 things weren't there too.

But what should we do if we use the cat for muffling ?

Anyway, I think that layering + equing is a good starting point for kicks.

well if it shat in there I'd skip the politeness and thump it well and good a few times... and have the camera ready. :hihi:

Well, the politeness would be relative, given the situation. Something like: 'Ok you mangy piece of coyote bait, it's SHOW TIME!!!' :D

Oh, and btw? That's the difference betwen a cat and a dog. A dog would sit there, listen to your performance, then calmly walk over to your bass drum and calmly piss in it to show his distain-then slowly walk out side! :-)
