Hi All

This is actually my very first submission here in the KvR Cafe monthly contest! The Prog Rock theme really interested me as I grew up in the era. Yes, Genisis, Gentle Giant, ELP, The Jazz fusion era, all of that. So you might say it is really infused in me, and tends to come out even in my other ambient pieces.

Without further adu, here is

Lost Souls Dreams

There was a time of musical love and peace
Before the era of the Dancing Queen and Grease
There was a time, when music was alive
Our heroes Jim and Jimi didn't survive

When music was still passion
And not the newest substyle in fashion
That time we want to relive forever
with this kvr contest endeavour

(Don't blame me if this is not true prog rock, I'm known to be bad in genres, and probably Jim and Jimi have nothing to do with the genre anyway ...)

Hello. The 70ies are not exactly where I feel very comfortable musically, but then… they did prepare the Eighties, didn't they? So I consulted Wikipedia, forgot most of what I'd read and this thing evolved:

Let us alone

As a tribute to "Concept albums" I added a few hardly understandable words from Tennyson's
"The Lotos Eaters" (1832):
Hateful is the dark-blue sky,
Vaulted o'er the dark-blue sea.
Death is the end of life; ah, why
Should life all labour be?
Let us alone.

Cheers, V.

I always liked progressive rock, but it seemed like too much work to arrange anything in that genre. This contest makes you work!
The 70's and Beyond

Recently escaped from the 60's, time to move along.
Get in touch with reality, where do I belong?
Disco fever is burning, but it's not for me.
Still in search of the Truth I know could set me free.

Find a girl and settle down - responsibility to raise a son

Get a job and buy a car and hope that it will last.
Build a house, pay the bills - it's time to cut the grass.
Just the love of the family, it's the only thing to last.

It takes a lot of work, and you'll never catch up.
But don't lose sight of what you really need.
I takes a lot of work, but it'll be OK.

Don't let life get you down
Keep your feet on the ground
Take a night on the town and...

This is a fragment of what I was able to come up with this month. It's an Allman Brothers chestnut that I never grow tired of. Even after 36 years. Besides the Allmans were a prime example what I loved about 70's Rock Music.

I will post a longer version in the Gossip thread if anyone is interested.

Recorded and mixed in Sonar 5.2 with two separate guitar takes except for the coda which was one take split across two tracks.

Edited and mastered in Adobe Audition 2.0 :with iZotope Ozone 3 and EAS Finis.

Drums: FXpansion BFD; drum parts prepared using MusicLab SlicyDrummer and BFD grooves edited by hand.

Bass organ and pads: SampleTank 2; Sonik Synth 2 and Miroslav Philharmik.

Guitar Effects: Amplitude 2.1.

Drum Compression: EAS/Roger Nichols Dynamizer

Back in 1971, I opened my Cubase 4 and made this song: so it sounds rusty...

Hello.

I listened to some old King Crimson, ELP and Mahavishnu Orchestra. I can't beat them, but I can join the competition :)

This track is called: Fanfare For A Fan Of Fairs

Thank you, Niko, for hosting. And thank you all for listening.

at the end of the 70's, i was 10 years old, so this was really hard for me, because i just never listened to prog rock in its heyday. i don't know if this track is prog, or just plain goofy, but i read on wikipedia that the songs often delved into esoteric subject matter (fantasy, sci/fi, etc), and thus, this tune was born.

Take Me To Your Leader (The Mutilated Cattle Mix)

what i remember about the 70's is star wars, close encounters of the 3rd kind, and the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy, so that's what i worked with.

Lyrics:

You paralyze me in the night
(lights in the sky)
You probe me oh so right

Take me to your leader
(that's what you said)
Take me to your leader
(your voice in my head)

Take me on a trip to galaxies
(far, far away)
I'll pack my towel and toothbrush
We can leave today

--------------------------------------

in no certain order, i used:

wusikstation, synth1, FL7 demo (which exponentially increased the difficulty due to not being able to save projects), sonar LE, boo bass, fruity drum synth and kick, wavelab lite, fostex D80, MXL990 mic and a crappy imitation of a certain science fiction icon's trademark sound

"Yes Maybe, But Then Again..."

I couldn't get YES outta my head when trying to come up with something prog. Not that this sounds like yes, but in some bizarre subconcious manner they influenced this piece. Then again, its 2:30am as i am finishing up. So...

Made with samples, Firebird, and Slayer2.
Had some fun making this piece. May have to play with it some more later.
