what is a sinker in songwriting?

Post

Where did you find this? Looking at the whole context could make it clear.

I'd say either it's a chord progression that's going down (e.g G D/F# F C/E) or it's missing a T and it's not a compliment...

A song which peaks quickly at the top of the charts and then does nothing but sink?

I have no idea. I agree, the context is probably essential.

Opposite to Hook? Bait-sinker...

Post

yes bosseJo it's related to the hook and what it does is kill the hook somewhere so when u hear the hook again you like the hook even more. problem is how can I make the best sinker for a given hook.there must be somekind of rule .contry songwriters use this technique all the time. And I know each time I heared Shania Twain on tv I used to find a strange part that brought tension and it was the sinker. That's it I am off to youtiube to study.

Post

is that right?
so there's a melody line
a hook
and a sinker?

seems way too neat a package

so similar to a bridge or break?
pedal steel solo?

Post

no the sinker is actualy the strange part of the chorus situated at 3 quaters of the chorus or at the end

Do you have an example of a tune that uses a hook and sinker? There's something fishy in that sentence isn't there :)

I'm likely to be wrong on this, but XTC's King For A Day may be a good example of a hook+sinker...(edit: or now that I think about it, maybe a sinker w/return to the hook)
We shall see orchestral machines with a thousand new sounds, with thousands of new euphonies, as opposed to the present day's simple sounds of strings, brass, and woodwinds. -- George Antheil, circa 1925 ---

the fisherman's approach to songwriting, hook, line, and sinker. You have to start with a great hook idea, often the title. Then you need a great first line that is strong enough to hold the listener from the start. And, finally, you need to leave the listener with something significant which sinks into their memory so they'll know what to request on the radio or at the stores."

That all sounds sort of meaningless to me.

Translation:

Hook = quality, memorable musical idea
Line = quality, memorable musical idea
Sinker = quality, memorable musical idea

isn't that just sort of like saying "write a good song" and then slapping a fishing analogy on it?

Yes, it is "sort of like" that... when translated poorly for effect.

Here at KVR there's always the "fish" option (unless you fancy the Pony option more :hihi: )
It's not my idea btw...
