in Mac 10.4.8, I cannot mount Receptor. Appletalk is on, but the finder won't see the network. Not even if i go to the IP address manually. Probably something obvious...

Thanks

I'm no Mac expert, but I have read several times in this forum that with Tiger and up, you need to use Samba (windows networking?) and not Appletalk.

Hope this helps.

Hi Ollie

I _think_ we dealt with this over the phone... and I think you would have called me back if that weren't the case, but for everyone's benefit, there are a couple of really important things to remember when connecting to Receptor.

DON'T use Appletalk unless you have OS9. You don't need it, and it will actually introduce file name problems. Appletalk limits the name convention of its files so that when you copy over some commercial libraries, like EWQLSO Gold, you'll get file name errors.

You'll want to use Samba as a connection standard instead. Which reminds me of a funny story when i was in New York a few years back and they were launching a perfume called Samba at Bloomingdales. They had these guys posted at each escalator dressed in fancy latino costumes saying "SAAAMMMMBAAA LADIES..." and you could hear these guys all over the store. One of those surreal New York moments...

Now that your life is complete after learning that important tidbit, you'll want to enter the following into the address space that you get when you select "CONNECT TO SERVER" from the finder:

smb://aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd

Where aaa, bbb, ccc, ddd is the address of your Receptor.

If you are connected via a crossover cable, your address WILL ALWAYS BE:

smb://192.168.254.253

Couple of other tidbits: spelling counts! This is an exact address match, so if you are off by one digit, or forget a period, there will be no connection.

If all else fails, please call technical support and we will be happy to help you out.

Cheers

Hi Everyone,

In addition to what Bryan said:

I find it convenient to set Receptor to use a fixed address (instead of using DHCP). Then, once you've mounted the HD via Samba to your Mac, you can make an 'alias' of the mounted HD and always keep it lying around (in a folder, on the desktop). Then the next time you wish to connect Receptor's HD to the Mac, you can simply double-click on the alias.

This is much more convenient than hunting down the address and using Samba all the time.

"SAAAMMMBAA Ladies" -- Good one Bryan!

I could see making a sample of that available on the mac for when I double click on my Receptor alias! :)

Regards,
Kevin L
