For What it's worth ... Jupiter-8V (demo)

Post

Hi everyone,

Just for kicks, I was able to install Jupiter-8V (demo) on my receptor, using the unsupported method - AND adding some entries to the registry via RegEdit.

The Jupiter runs well on my Receptor Pro.

Of course, the big demo limitation is saving sounds is disabled. This means not only are the "Save" commands disabled, but the ability to change PRNs/NPRNs is also disabled (such that you can't save and load Receptorized patches either). Too bad though, this synth seems pretty flexible.

Nice one looneytunes :) You know, this Regedit business, do you need a certain degree of programming experience to use it? I'd love to be able to get things working that others have using Regedit - I don't expect people to hand over thier hard work in getting things to work, and would like to have a go myself. But I won't do it if you need a certain degree of program knowledge!

Hi C3boy,

I can guide you through this (I'll send it out this afternoon once the kids are napping).

It doesn't really involve programming. Just some good detective work (figuring out the entries that the original manufacturer set up).

You do need a bit of courage to follow Oggs discussion (to enable regedit on your machine). Once you do this (and you are careful not to touch existing entries) creating new entries is easy.

More news soon ...

Hi again,

So I am going to summarize what I did with RegEdit to get Jupiter-8V demo working. It's possible you might even get J8V to run simply by only doing an unsupported install - it does need the registry changes to point to the directory where the presets are located (if you wish to have the presets present), but J8V seems to work, even without the presets.

Also, you will need a PC with J8V installed to get both the .dll and the preset files.

1.) First, make sure that you have RegEdit up and working on your receptor.

You need to follow Oggs instructions to do this. His FAQ was located here:

http://ogg.kicks-ass.net/receptor/

Lately, I haven't been able to reach his page, but his FAQ is copied at the Yahoo group MUSERECEPTOR:

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/Mu ... %20tricks/

These instructions are pretty complete, but if you are not a programmer, you will need to figure out how to use an editor like VI to complete these instructions (eg to edit the files Ogg says to edit).

2.) On a PC, install the Jupiter-8V demo.

3.) from the PC, copy over the .dll and program files over to your Receptor to do an unsupported install.

a.) create an 'Arturia/Jupiter8' folder inside your 'Unsupported Plugins' folder.

b.) copy the Jupiter-8V.dll here

c.) from your PC, copy the "\Program Files\Arturia\Jupiter-8V\Save folder to your new "Arturia/Jupiter8" receptor folder
(This has all the preset files).

d.) Go to your Receptor's 'System' Tab, and do the install.

(At this point, Jupiter8 may work, but it won't have the presets available, and it might be missing icons).

4.) On your receptor, launch RegEdit

If you've installed RegEdit correctly, you launch this from the "Plugin Tools" button on Receptor's "Setup" tab.

5.) Add a new Key under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT for Jupiter-8V.bank/DefaultIcon

a.) In RegEdit, select the folder HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, and open it up.
b.) while the folder HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT is selected, select the Menu command Edit/New/Key. This will create a new entry under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, and it will be waiting for you to type in a name for the entry.
c.) rename the entry to 'Jupiter-8V.bank' (exact spelling and case).
d.) Now select the new entry (should already be selected after the rename) and create a new Key under it called 'DefaultIcon' (same as before - use the menu command Edit/New/Key, and rename the entry).

5.) Add a new Key under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE for Arturia/Jupiter-8V

a.) As above, select the entry called SOFTWARE under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, and open it up. Select the Menu command Edit/New/Key. This will create a new entry under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. Name this entry 'Arturia'.

b.) Select 'Arturia', and create a new Key called 'Jupiter-8V'

6.) Set a new String under Jupiter-8V for "installdir"

a.) Select the entry that you created above for 'Jupiter-8V'.

b.) Select the Menu command Edit/New/String. This will show an entry on the right side of the editor. Rename this new String entry to 'installdir'.

c.) Set the value of the 'installdir' string to "C:\Program Files\VST Plugins\Unsupported Plugins\Arturia\Jupiter8". Do this by double clicking on the 'Data' column of the new string entry (which brings up a dialog for you to enter this value). This tells Jupiter8V where to find the base dir for its presets.

7.) Load the J8V plugin onto a Receptor channel, and enjoy!

Adding new entries into RegEdit is pretty easy. Make sure you spell everything correctly. As long as you don't edit other entries, you won't risk anything else on Receptor.

Enjoy, Regards,
Kevin L

Kevin, thanks a heck of a lot for taking the time to do this for me and everyone else. You will be rewarded greatly in the afterlife (yes, that right - an installer for RealGuitar and TruePianos await us all! ;) ) I look forward to 'registering my edits'! If you don't get feedback from me within a month or so, then presume my regedit went badly wrong, set fire to my pc, took out the broadband lines for a 10 mile radius, and made me a gibbering wreck. Im hoping not to be so stupid though! :)

I also wish to add my thanks, Kevin. Now, buy the damn thing and get the FULL package to work!!! :D

looneytunes, will you try Poly-Ana on Receptor?

Email or PM me with your results. If it doesn't work, I'll probably have some ideas for you to try.

If you can help me get it working I'll issue you a free license.

Cheers.

Well, I hate to be a naysayer here, but the full version requires a bloody synchrosoft dongle, so it's not gonna work on the receptor.

Still, good work Kevin :-)

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the notes. I still remain hopeful that MUSE will incorporate Syncrosoft plugs into their platform someday soon.

In 1.6, Muse promises 'a more open procedure' for installing plugs onto Receptor - and a more formal community for adapting plugs. We'll see what this means soon.

PS. Despite lack of 'save', Jupiter-8V is still fun to play with!

Hi again,

I spoke before about how to create the required RegEdit entries for J8V.

I wanted to add some more general notes on discovering the correct Regedit keys for a given plugin. I mentioned previously that it takes a little detective work, and an equivalent plugin installed on a PC.

Once you've installed the plug on a PC, you should launch RegEdit there, and hunt around a bit. Typically, software manufacturers create Keys under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/Software or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software. They may either create a Key with the manufacturer's name (like 'Arturia') - with a sub-key for the product (like 'Jupiter-8V'), or they may create keys only under the product name. Usually programmers follow conventions here, so it makes your job as detective easier.

For adapting a plug to Receptor, the important thing is to try to create 'exactly' the same hierarchy for RegEdit entries as they are on the PC. In some cases (where you need to describe Paths) you try to give values that are logical paths where files are placed on Receptor.

While I'm at it, I also wanted to mention the importance of checking the System Log (in Receptor's "Reports" folder) when you try to install an unsupported plug. It will often give good clues on what you need to do (like finding missing .dlls).

Also - another set of useful clues can be found on installation logs. When you run an installer on a windows machine (or remover for that matter), the installer often offers a log to see what files were added/removed. This can give you an idea of other files that a program might install somewhere other than a standard place (for files that a .dll might require).

I'm sure other Receptor jocks like Kermit and Hybernation and TConrady can give some of their own pearls.

Overall, I must say that I'm almost equally amazed at what (windows) vstis actually can be made to run on Receptor - as I am frustrated when I run into a plug with an anti-piracy scheme that breaks on Receptor.

Cheers,
Kevin L.

FWIW, Hybernation & Looneytunes, Muse has told me they do plan to support Synchrosoft with the V2 OS update, due someday. Let's hope that day is fairly soon, though I know there is at least one more software update first.

good work. It's a shame that Arturia don't seem to be making their products Receptor friendly like some notable others. Anyone have a working link to Ogg's discussion on how to enable regedit on the Receptor? The link to Ogg's page seems to have been edited to exclude this and I haven't had a response yet from the Yahoo groups.

Hi.

Anyone that wants to tell others what changes to the registry they have made can easily create a regedit script.

Just select the key that you have changed and select export... this will create a file that your friends can click on and change their registry.

If you make more than one change to the registry you can export multiple files. These files can be merged into one if you want to edit a little. Maybe there is an easier way that i don't know.

As always with editing registry... be careful. You can break things.

For more info just Google how to make .reg .

Also, .reg files should probably be saved in the older "Win9x/NT4" format (available in the "Save as type" drop-down in Windows regedit).
