Yup, mr. Pro-Sounds. :D

Don't worry beej, we won't have time to steal your flame for a while yet. :hihi: :P

After I get done with the Albino and z3ta+ set updates though, we're gonna see what zebra is really made of. :)

and see if I can't make the money I spent on it back :hihi:

ttoz, what kind of sounds would you be interested in? Pads, leads, bass, odd things? I ask because I actually thought about doing a Zebra 2 soundset as a follow-up to the QuadraSID release on Pro-Sounds, but with Beej's release I put that on hold and put my focus elsewhere.. but maybe.. well.. you never know ;) Either way, if would be good to hear suggestions.

ok make sure to bring a compass and a map on your journey... Z2 is so deep you're likely to get lost.. :)

That's what I envision too ttoz. I've heard so much ranting and raving how zebra2 is a formiddable replacement for a virus, among others, and haven't heard much by the way of presets that says that. I did do some playing around my self with the filters though...some very nice ones in there...plus, tons of routing choices...just from the filters I can hear some really sweet sounds in my head coming from this beauty. Torben and I were looking into the possibility of doing filterscape presets, but I'm not sure how many people own that......so maybe zebra2 would be better....we'll see, need to do some more research. :)

Pro-who..? :D

I think Howard's planning on porting some of his Virus presets to Z2, based from some comments in another thread. He knows the Virus *very* well, having written the manual and stuff on it, and he's a huge fan of Z2 as well.

But, from what I've heard (indirectly through samples, rather than directly with the hardware) the Virus's filter has a different quality to any of Zebra's current filters, so while Z2 can do a lot of what the Virus can do in terms of features, the exact character won't be the same - and if it *is* that character you are after, then currently the only solution is to buy one of the Virus variants.

But knowing you, you'd be bored with it in a couple of weeks, hocking it here, getting fed up again, and buying another one etc ;)

Psh...please. No synth too deep. ;)
Very excited to dive into it though....can't wait til I can finish up the updates and dig my teeth into this monster...deep isn't the word.

I'm just about done with a bank that might be just what you're looking for. We'll see though. :)

Also, ttoz, if I'm right you're mainly interested in trance-genre patches, yes? Have you actually played on a Virus directly, or are you basing your opinions of it's sound character from records? (Where the parts are arranged, mixed, and treated often very well).

If the latter, then no synth will give you what you want, not even a Virus!

I've only played on one (a Virus Polar) once for about twenty minutes in a shop. I thought it was pretty nice, but also part of that comes from having a dedicated control surface in front of you, methinks...

Virus Shmirus. :hihi: it's a great synth, but the "holy-grail, absolutely untouchable" ideal is all in everyone's heads IMO.

[edit] (please don't come to my house and kill me now that I've spoken out against the hype :hihi: Not trying to start WWIII, just an opinion) [edit]

Hmmm... right now I think Z2 is quite capable of copying the Virus filter characteristics. Of course I'll have to back up this claim with some patches...

I have a Virus C... It's a great synth, and I love the thing, but all this virus lust is a bit baffling. There's definitely some soft synths out there that sound as good or better, which isn't to say the Virus sounds bad of course...
