receptor w/ novation's ReMOTE 61 Sl midi controller

Does anyone out there know how to run a muse receptor on a live gig using a novation remote 61 sl midi controller so that the remote 61 sl treats the virtual instruments in the receptor in the same way it would in a sequencer application? How would one be able to use the Automap feature for the receptor? Is see that novation has a uniwire download but I haven't been able to get much use out of it with just the receptor without using Logic or Cubase. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I don't believe that the automap feature will work with Receptor. I have a remote 61 SL myself and would love it if it would.
I've started a thread asking if anyone is interested in sharing controller templates, such as templates for the remote SL series. As there are so many plugins and many controllers, it might take a while to compile a library for the exact soft synth you want to control on your controller, but eventually, I would think they all might be posted and even alternative layouts if the community enthusiastically supported the idea. If you think this might be helpful to you and to other new users (I'm included in this category) please add your voice to my thread under "controller templates".
Wish I had better news for you.
Thanks,
Will

I would strongly suggest that you spend a SOLID weekend getting really good at assigning controls on your Remote61SL. (I don't think there is any controller out there right now that has a better feeling keyboard. If you're a player, then you know what I'm talking about. That alone made the purchase well worth it!
I purchased the Remote 61SL thinking it would be the do-all end-all for me. It's almost been a year and I'm just starting to get comfortable with how to do a setup. It'll be different for everyone I guess depending on your use. But the sounds I use are B3, Wurlitzer, Rhodes, Acoustic Piano, Strings, some analog synths.
I've got a few configurations that work well for me. But lately, I've been pretty happy with this setup (after hundreds of hours trying different configurations): On the Remote 61SL, I use the template kybd channel to change plugins (I know I could use different templates). The OS on the Remote is very disappointing. (I'll get to that in another thread.) The two rows of buttons on the right, below the faders are all assigned to send program change messages on whatever the keyboard channel is. So when I'm triggering the B4 (ch1), those buttons send patch changes to B4. Same thing for Kontakt which listens on MIDI (ch2), Pro-53(ch3) and Guitar Rig on the Line-In coming from my Wurly 200a*. I also run the Line out from the Wurly to a Mutron Filter III --> EH Small Stone --> EH Small Clone --> Receptor --> Amp
* Track 4 is assigned to [Line-In], the 1st insert effect 'Guitar Rig' listens on (ch4) for controller and program change messages.
All other controls on the Remote 61SL are setup for B4 (which I use the most). drawbars, drive, reverb, perc, Vibrato/Chorus, etc...
You could also send your Program changes to the Receptor itself and use snapshots, but I found that it doesn't suit my needs as well. I'd be limited to 16 "patches" instead of 16 plugins with many patches for each.
I hope this helps.
cheers,
- Harry

With the latest OS, you can tell the Receptor to listen for Program Change messages on a specific channel. And have the rest of those messages routed right to the plugins (cc# and prog). I actually gave up on that Snapshot concept for my uses. I just wanted a simple way to run a few VSTi and be able to change their patches and receive cc messages.
The MIDI routing in the Receptor is painfully inadequate. I hope they decide to allow routing for MIDI messages to go 'thru' to the insert plugins on that channel. One can only hope.
My solution is not a silver bullet, but it solved a simple problem I had trying to get the most out of each plugin that's loaded. I plan on creating copies of my Remote SL template into the first 5 or so slots. Each one will be set to transmit on sequential channels:
Remote plug tx
-----------------------------
Template 1: B4 ch1
Template 2: Kontakt ch2
Template 3: Pro-53 ch3
Template 4: impOSCar ch4
etc...
We can also load more plugs and have 'em listen on the same MIDI channels to create really complex patches with layers, splits and zones too.

Thanks for the insight Harry. I'm glad to hear that someone else has spent hundreds of hours on the same two machines I've been obsessing over the last month.
I have a quick question for you though, or anybody else who is familiar with it:
Doesn't it seem like Receptor is receiving all the MIDI information that the Remote SL is sending it yet Remote SL doesn't seem to receive any of the MIDI messages that are supposed to be sent out from the Receptor? For example: if volume is set on 100 on both the receptor and the remote sl and then I change the volume on the receptor to a value of 50 without touching the remote sl, although the value of the volume is different on the receptor, the remote SL is unaware of the difference- and then when I change the volume from the Remote SL, the values skips drastically from 50 to 100 with no in-between. I'm I just not aware of an option to make the Remote SL be capable of both sending and receiving MIDI messages?
thanks,

The Receptor does not currently send MIDI CC info out when the volume sliders are moved in the graphical interface or via the front panel.

is there a smart way to solve this problem?
say for instance the setup of
-laptop sending out MIDI notes + cc etc.
-MIDI controller for additional parameter control and note playing
-receptor
maybe it's possible to route the MIDI from the laptop through the MIDI controller, and then into the receptor? this way you can move around say filter freqs with the midicontroller, and use preprogrammed filter freq. changes from the laptop at once.
any thoughts on this approach?

Hi hoestreicher,
Would you mind sharing your templates and posting them in the template thread I created? If more of us did that then perhaps when we pick up a new combination of controllers or software instruments someone might have posted a ready made template that we can edit for our own use.
Sharing templates might also lead to new discoveries as to tips and tricks that we may not have thought of ourselves.
Just my .02.
Thanks,
Will
