I did a little test. Some of you who use or are curious about using "direct monitoring" audio from midi-guitar/midi-drum triggered audio/midi module.
Then midi recorded into soundcard/host track.

What this test showed, was that the audio recorded into cubase was almost perfectly in sync with the midi data of the same signal.

- Method ;

- Drum triggers played
- Into alesis DM-5 drum triggered sound module
- recorded drum samples audio to cubase audio trk
- recorded midi output from same module to cubase midi trk

- Results ;

- Timing difference not even close to being noticable. 2.5ms difference.
Soundcard set to 1024 samples/44.1khz

Here's the audio. Audio trk on L midi on R

The drums are different...but you get the idea.

Again I did this to show that drum triggered modules to midi in themselves do not cause any more latency then audio input...for practical recording applications.
Guitar midi convertors will not give as good a timing result. From this test it seems the guitar convertor generates latency from the convertion of sound...reading a sinewave, analog signal then turning it into midi notes.
The conversion with triggered drums only needs to read an electrical spike to switch a midi note out, much like the keyboard.
The guitar convertor needs to read frequency also ! This might be where the extra time goes. Shame.

I have the Roland GI-20 guitar midi convertor. I'll do a similar timing test and post that here for what its worth.

Good stuff.

Can't wait for GI-20 test.

Hi mman.

I know your a GI-20 user, so here's the "real dirt"

- Method ;

- midi guitar playing 16th notes
- plugged into roland GI-20 midi convertor
- recording through roland GI-20 driver to nuendo midi trk
- also guitar's pickup out direct into soundcard at 1024 samples/44.1khz recorded to nuendo audio trk
- each recorded simultaineously

- Result A ;

- midi data 14ms ahead audio data. Ruler set to secs.

Here is mixdown of result A; (without midi trk delay compensation adjustment)
http://home.comcast.net/~newdabranck/mu ... rk.dly.mp3
Here is mixdown of result B; (with -14ms midi trk delay compensation adjustment)
http://home.comcast.net/~newdabranck/mu ... rk.dly.mp3

Both mixdown examples panned to L for clarity.
Clean guitar = audio
Dirty guitar = midi (synth)

This info is worth remembering if you want to sync midi and audio from a single guitar.

Next test - To measure the latency between monitoring your project trks and recording a midi trk from a midi guitar convertor while monitoring the guitars pickup through your amp.

You bet it is ! Don't tell anyone where you got it...ok? :hihi:

Ha! I'm still up mman. It's been 28hrs! I gotta sleep.
I would have slept but had to go to traffic court this morn. I'm just returning. :help:
