Low, Deep String Cello Type Sounds With Comb Filters?

It seems that the issue with emulating string instruments with comb filters is that I can't get really deep, low instrument emulations.

Because comb filters are delays, I just start getting echo type sounds in the lower registers.

All KP Method - type synths seem to do this (even string studio, etc...), so it's not Z's fault at all.

Has anyone tried/found a way around this?

I've gotten somewhat convincing results from carefully keyscaled lowpass and/or band reject filters. I think it also depends on what the comb is being fed.

Of course at lower tunings a comb is going to sound less like a string because the closer it gets to 20ms the more it will sound like discernable delays. However, if you can blur those delays a bit you can get a more realistic response. I have been able to get some very realistic (and also very synthetic) results by using MFM2 this way.

What do you mean by blur?

Just LP?

The problem with masking it with LP is that you lose all the richness of the sound...

Do you have any patches or mp3s of this sound?

Thanks for the reply!

I'll see if I can come up with something when I get home from work.

By blur I mean add chorus, reverb or anything that can mask the bright characteristics of the delay without losing the body.

Generally to get a more "natural" sound I would process the sound in parallel. Use a comb with a longer delay for the low-end and low pass it, then use a comb with a delay time one or two octaves above for mid-range and band pass it. This way you get a smooth low-end, but without the long delay time artifacts.

That makes sense!

The "body" doesn't have to come from the comb filter - try using another LP filter in parallel, fed from the same oscillator.
